The real world? I could be wrong but that headline and those shares look like some clever viral marketing, I wouldn't be surprised if the story is made up.
There is big money with those viral news sites if you can get some steam behind them and produce emotion jerking stories like this.

Those guys are excellent, I read there pretty often. It's funny reading the comments from people on their articles that don't realize it's a satire site.
