I think the use of those two terms has become unnecessary. Most people do a combination of both. Even those that think they don't.

The goal is acquire users for your project and ultimately make profit. However you get there, long as you're not breaking the law, doesn't matter much.

Well, I believe OP is referring to BH SEO, it's posted under SEO section at least,
non-marketing BH stuff is not even allowed to be discussed in BHW as far as I'm concerned,
