Um..I just added this to a WH site with 6k uniques and I have a ton of click already. Cool thing is the site has not been doing $$$ much lately..

Some ideas on what can we do to prevent problems with the affiliate networks? What type of cloaking/redirecting/hiding links and pages do we need? Can we hide the page with the toolbar and all the referrer information the affiliate manager is receiving is the main domain. And id we put a legit landing page on the domain index will this work?
 
what about using a php redirect. Whenever I use a php redirect it shows the referring page as just my php redirect page. For example if someone clicks on mysite.com then clicks on mysite.com/redirect.php it shows mysite.com/redirect.php as the referrer. I dont know if there would be a problem with this as I use this method to hide my affiliate code from competition. And that would be my excuse if I were ever questioned. What do you think.

Another possible solution would be to use a gateway page. You could set up a page using the original method then when they click to download the toolbar they are directed to another page that directs them to download the toolbar.

I am sure conversions would slip but you will just need your ad to be more compelling.

wmitchell what kind of php redirect do you mean? if it's header("Location: ...") that does not show the redirect page as the referer, it will show the page the link is on, unless you are using a bizarre browser.

what I'm doing is sending the info bar link to a legit landing page.. they were pretty adamant about me having a referrer, but maybe I got unlucky with a bitchy AM
 
How can we do this method for the long term? I mean what should we do to fit with the affiliate networks TOS? I don't want to put days and days of work with this and than an AM contact me and say "We must terminate your account". Is there a way to avoid that?

Also i would like to know possible free traffic sources for this kind of offer outside of the celebrities, warez and porn niche.
 
Unless you are doing this with another install program this will not be a longterm method at all. Since people are already getting noticed for doing this method with yahoo, accounts are probably being flagged as soon as they start promoting the yahoo toolbar. I am not going to do it with yahoo until I can find a way to fake the referrer.
 
mightybb I made the same stupid mistake and didn't cover my referer. I was using a fresh/test account so its ok but yes I woke up and discovered I was kicked out also.
 
what if you made your landing page be a COPY of this page to the tee and just have the download button go to your affiliate link:

it's against their TOS to impersonate yahoo
 
is it possible to put a metarefresh stuff some cookies and then send it off to a relevant site?
 
You know, this is a cool idea. I won't be trying it myself but if I did I think this is the perect campaign to throw through Yahoo answers. I would guess most people would think.. "what? oohhh.. i have to download this - since I am ON yahoo already - to get THAT, ok" and bam..
 
Too bad, CJ decline my application. There must be something else out there.
 
Sorry to see this trick running out of steam. Some suggested workarounds: I wonder if "you could just use an htaccess and cloak the link to something yourdomain.com/yahoo" in some fashion, in the form of an authority site, like a link you might add to wikipedia article. If the referrer couldn't be questioned, maybe you could get by. What if you joined Yahoo under one name and link, then joined CJ under another, then somehow linked the two to receive commisions? Are there other toolbars or AMs out there that wouldn't be as sophisticated to catch anything? Just brainstorming.
 
Hey guys... this is how I setup my double meta so that if asked I could show a legit source. I don't know if it will work... but here goes...

Setup a WH site with a few pages and add a "downloads" section. In this download section list various links of which Yah00 or other PPI links are listed and give good and legit explanations of what these downloads are and how they work. Link the Yah00 (or other) link to a redirect page that goes to the final Yah00 destination (if asked tell them you want to setup a more detailed landing page here in the future but haven't had time to work on it, so in the mean time it just redirects).

Ok, so you have your cover setup. Now, do a double meta refresh from your fake toolbar. The first meta refreshes to the legit WH site meta you created and goes to Yah00.

I'm new and still learning... but it seems to me this might work.
 
I think the idea Jetton has suggested has some merit. For the WH site you could build a legitimate looking software directory / download site and have various downloads available including the Yah00 toolbar. Then use a double-meta from your BH file share site to make it look like the toolbar was downloaded from the WH site.
 
You could have a variable being passed to the pseudo download page that will determine whether or not to make the page redirect or not.

I've made $20.85 from this till date. I got over 500 visitors to the page but only 11 conversions.
 
One more idea, no redirects involved: Just write a generic article about the Yahoo toolbar (put it on an article directory, minisite or a hubpage) talking up the toolbar, and incidently state it could help you make money online. Put two links at the end, one for the CJ link, and another for a free (1-2 page) ebook of you slapped together about "How to make money with Yahoo." The latter link actually goes to a TrialPay page you've set up (the direct processing page, your article serves as the landing page). The user gets the ebook once they complete a free offer.

And what's in that ebook? An explanation of an incentive offer where if they click on the other (CJ) link and download the toolbar, you'll paypal them 50 cents or so---thus fulfilling your promise to show them 'how to make money with Yahoo.' The referrer looks to CJ as being a totally legit hubpage or article site, and they're unlikely to complete the Trialpay offer to find your incentive offer in the ebook. You make money on either article link that's clicked where the action is completed, and maybe they'll both get clicked!
