Legality in distributing ebooks?

I was thinking of giving away free ebooks on a soon-to-be site, but was wondering how much legal trouble I could get into?

Would anyone bother hunting me down, or would it not matter? Obviously not every ebook writer would be happy if someone was giving their stuff away for free...but....

If you are doing it openly, you are bound to eventually run into some kind of hassle. Just make sure that none of the downloads are on your FTP site. Make them available ONLY through the file sharing sites like MediaFire and RapidSpread. Also, you might want to get hosting in a country which is more "lax" on pirated software and ebooks (China and Russia are pretty easy on pirated shares).

They can get you if they want.
Using copyscape they are able to track very good.

I would make sure that the ebooks are not being hosted
anywhere that a USA lawyer can link to YOU!

Definitely not a good idea to do in a way that's connected to you, in the US. Civil for sure, and maybe criminal issues in this. I'm not a lawyer.

copyscape check the content of the pages, not the files hosted.

U can cooperate with the author on the specific topic. Ask for email submission to dl the ebook. and share the list with the author.

http://knowfree.net/ is a site with illegal ebooks that I use for few years and doesn't seems to have problems. And I believe that is making a lot of money with the ads

One good friend of mine told me Russia is no longer safe place for such things ;-/

It really depends on the popularity and caliber of the ebooks. Some are just written by authors who have smaller consumer bases and simply do not sell as many copies. These low caliber ebooks will probably not get you in trouble simply because the author is not looking to see if his ebook is being pirated.

But heed Wiz's advice....
