Hello everyone,

I was wondering on how I could learn to code and do web design. Can someone please point me in the right direction as this is something I have wanted to do for a long time but did not know where to start.

How much time would I have to invest in this to become proficient at it?
Also what are the main languages in the web design world that are a must to know?

The goal is to design ecommerce sites, landing pages, etc

Thanks

If this thread is in the wrong category, can a mod please move it.

one word - Wordpress

I'd have to agree. I've never experienced any limitations from Wordpress. It will save you a ton of time and the learning curve is less steep.

Yeah, go with wordpress if you want to be mediocre and do what everyone else is doing :P Otherwise take some web design & development classes. Make your own stuff, learn how everything works and you'll bank BIG.

If you can't afford classes, there are many good books out there. I recently shared a pretty good book that you should read before you even start learning web design/dev, download it from:

http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...-get-dont-make-me-think-read.html#post4028876

Then I suggest you start learning more web usability first before anything else. Then start learning HTML, then CSS, then Javascript, then PHP and finally MYSQL.

You could obviously take the short route and do wordpress, that's up to you.

Thanks but what are the exact steps I should take? I have no clue where to start. I prefer to go through the non-wordpress route.

He want's to learn WEB DESIGN.. not use custom built preset rubbish that everyone has.

Go to w3schools bro and learn html, then css then php. You should be good to go then. Good luck.

yes exactly. Thanks a lot

Start off with W3School. Once you are done with that site, move to any of these sites:

thenewboston.com
tutsplus.com

Both of the above links have got tons of resources that can keep you busy for the next 6-10 months :)

Well firstly you need to know Photoshop I would start there, after that learn .css and .html

you could try out programs because that is how i make a website from scratch anyways and i assume all web designer uses programs to make things easier

NO...NO...NO... not wordpress.

wordpress is for affiliate crap and spam blogs..

go to lynda.com

They have a 7 day free trial
start by seeing the video tutorials by a guy named simon allardice i think..
fundamentals of web design..

then move up to xhtml
then css
then php
then javascript
and so on.

Now... do not get web developer confused with web designer...

which one are you shooting for?

w3schools is a good choice to learn web css,php and html
try it bro

I would suggest that you buy this book called HTML for dummies. I dont remember the name of the publishing company, but thats how i started my HTML journey. And trust me nothing like real coding, its always much better than Dreamweaver sh*t and wordpress....

ok to clarify I would like to learn how to code a site and not create templates as those can be purchased easily. Thanks everyone for their help. I am not too into wordpress and would like to design from scratch from a template

just go to youtube and search for video tutorials

No, please don't listen to the noobs. Learn it the right way. Get a book, sit down and read. Then read some more and then practice.

dont use video and wordpress...just go to w3chool and learn html, css, php, jquery etc..

This will be the best solution..

Try learning by videos like youtube they have tons of vids there on learning anything I learned wp there and still am. Just type in what you want to learn and filter results also. Bam and of course liearn here too
