With our .EDU bots I've been getting questions of how we always find a ton of sites to post links, and more specifically articles, to. Obviously I'm not going to hand you our link lists or they get hit hard but teach a man to fish and all of that (find your own links with this method). The most popular platform for easily finding places where you can create an account and post an article with contextual backlinks on a fresh page is MediaWiki. I created a quick video outlining how to do the posting process for best success (not pissing off admins, getting your article to stick and doing it quickly).

If you want to follow along with the video the site used in the example (live and accepting articles for ya) is:

    Code:
    http://wiki.scu.edu/live/wiki71/index.php?
    Watch the video:

    [video=youtube_share;NA_8KihvU50]http://youtu.be/NA_8KihvU50[/video]

To find more of these sites then you're going to want to use advanced Google search strings.

To locate MediaWiki sites my favorite search string is (remember this is for Google Search):

    powered by mediawiki inurl:index.php?

Now, this will yield hundreds of thousands of sites running the MediaWiki platform and although you can find .EDUs in there it is best to narrow it down to just .EDU sites by adding the appropriate variable to your search query:

    powered by mediawiki inurl:index.php? site:.edu

Copy and paste that into your Google search box and you will get a ton of .EDU MediaWiki sites. However, you?ll notice that probably about 85% of these don?t accept public registration to stop you from posting your promotional articles. To speed up the process and avoid having to view all of these we will now go ahead and search for articles that were obviously put up by someone else doing some SEO work. To do this we?ll add a term that we know to be maybe spam or a very popular keyword/key phrase; some examples include buy generic viagra or perhaps payday loan; play with different ones to find different articles and thus more .EDU sites which are running the MediaWiki platform. Here is what a final search term that will yield you sites ready to go may look like:

powered by mediawiki ?payday loan? inurl:index.php? site:.edu

Note that MediaWikis use something called wiki markup for formatting, not HTML, you can read about all the formatting codes here. The most important is the URL format which is: [http://www.site.com anchor text] or, as an example [http://imservicesolutions.com IM Services] would have an output like this:

    IM Services

    On your medaiwki article.

Hopefully that's all you need, did this kinda quickly from the writeup on my blog post its a little more in depth.[/I]

Thanks buddy! Also remember you can just swap .edu for .gov in the search string to find .GOVs on that platform.

Just a question. Do you use these sites directly to your moneysite? Or as tier2-3 only?

I use them as T1s and then I blast them with tier 2 links. They are full articles on non spammy sites, high authority .EDU sites. Great stuff for T1s.

They're nofollow but G loves them. Anyone that thinks that a nofollow link provides no juice is wrong; it never worked as intended and is just taken as one of several factors rather than being disregarded and has been treated this way for years. These sites contain a ton of other great factors low (as in no) other OBLs, contextual backlink/relevant content, anchor text backlink, authority and .EDU site, informational site as well that G loves. In addition anyone who has 100% d0-follow links is not paying attention to one of the biggest factors in link building in the last 4-5 major G algo changes - diversity. Anchor diversity KILLED a lot of big sites on the update and I guarantee you don't want a 100% d0-follow backlink portfolio, its just a matter of time and super unnatural looking. As well these sites themselves are mostly PR7-PR9s and rank for long tails on their own which brings you traffic as well.

If you're not a believer test it out, we see SERP movement on brand new sites with blasts to just hand picked high authority and .EDU mediawikis.

I've only created backlinks on edu profiles before. This should be way more effective. Thank you for the share :)

this is amazing!! this is a very noob question since I am very new to SEO (but have a programmers background). I am using MS for my website. Do you think the websites I find this way can be added using MS? or can you guys please tell me which tool would you guys be using after finding these edu/gov domains?

Definitely some good advice. I'm going to try to see how these fair with non-English articles - I'll report back with my results.

What a great thread, I managed to get 4 .edu links yesterday, something I have never managed before!

Just a question, do you find it difficult to create profiles? Normally I find: "You must have cookies enabled to log in to..." and
no place to create the actual account. Are there any workarounds or do I do something wrong?

    Thanks, reputation added btw!

IM Services is the keyword you woul'd be ranking for on your site? So let's i wanted to post Spun content with a link on a gaming site or a niche related to my site will the backllink rank my site or it won't, since for the site to post cbacklink must be similar content to my site. Isn't that so?
