We hired a programmer. It turns out he does nothing, complains, blames the world, then asks for more money.

He has implied that he will get us banned from Google, Affiliate programs, anything. He's a very nefarious character and he's blackmailing us!

What do we do????

hired over here or works in your office ?
anyways just Fire him
is that so difficult?

We found him through another web-talk forum.

Is he bluffing about being able to do all these things?

Is he saying that he will get you banned from Google Adsense?

no he's implied that he can do things to get me banned entirely from being listed on Google.

Threaten him with legal action.
If he does anything to harm your business, let him know that all of his court costs will be way more than whatever future payments he would have received from you.

He just can't do that, may be he can click fraud and ban you from adsense if you have. For the time being you can remove your ads and let adsense guys know about it.

He cannot de-list you from google, he is just blackmailing you... go a head and fire him, lodge a legal complaint and post about him in the forum where you have recruited him.

Always go with trusted members on forums where you can see some real reviews.

this guy has no money. he's constantly living on the brink of eviction (that's what he tells us all the time). he would just declare bankruptcy.

plus, we would have to pay the up-front costs of the lawsuit. we can't afford that. but wow, if you guys are bringing up lawsuits, it sounds like he truly can mess with us...

Edit: he can't de-list us from google? I hope you're right. that would be a sigh of relief

Take all their proof like messages, skype chat or other IM chat and if possible record the phone conversation. They are trying to deindexed your site.

Tell him to go suck a fat one

If he know your site he can neg seo your site to make it lose ranking

or you just give him gazzillion of works and nags him about it every hour, then delay his salaries, tell him you don't have money cause your client does not paid you yet because they are waiting for a job to be done ( the gazzilion of work you have given to your ass employee).

just be an ass employer and he will be happy to leave you. :)

or if he is in the same country with your company, just threaten him of legal action..

He can try to mess with your site, but he's probably just BSing you too be honest.
I only mentioned to threaten him with legal action...never said you had to go through with it. Most times legal threats are all that is needed :)

Just fire him. I would also keep all emails and other proof in case further action needs to be taken down the road.

record his threat (email, phone or anything), gather multiple proofs and register complaint in your local police station. Get a copy of that complaint. Keep it safe. If something happened.. for example if you got ban from google.. then tell them the truth and forward the copy as proof. I am sure they will unban.

Just tell him your totally stressed out, and now you have family issues, and you need to call a halt to the projects, and hire someone else to manage your sites as you need to check into rehab for heavy drinking or your wife will leave you. Tell him you would LOVE to keep him on, but there is a recession on, and your not sure if you can stay afloat. Tell him to drop you a message in a few months time once you get back on your feet, and can cope again, as your sure to have a new bigger project for double the money, and half the work. (then add his email and skype to your blacklist)

Then have a drink, while reflecting that things aren't so bad after all.

Hey guys thanks for the advice. I don't have much experience working with this guy. Up until now he's only worked with my partner, but now my partner wants me to work with him on something and I'm obviously hesitant. Especially after my partner called me completely panicked 20mins ago. But... he wants to continue to work with him. I don't understand it. I don't know of a single thing he's done that we couldn't have done ourselves. In the end, this is my partner's decision. I'm just trying to look after him.

Again, thanks for the advice. I needed to know what our options are in a worst-case-scenario.

EDIT: my partner says he wants to keep him around because he's more of a consultant than a doer. and he's a cheap consultant. I figure why can't google replace him.... But it's his call. it's his company. I'm only a partner in the sense that we've been best friends forever and my fate is attached to his.

Worst case scenario your partner is more heavily invested in the business, and you can't call the shot to fire him.

I agree with gathering evidence from any correspondence you have available, file a police report and then terminate his contract for insubordinate behavior. As previously mentioned, Google would likely comply with re-in station for the accounts you provide that may have suffered at the hands of the malicious ex-employee if it came down to that.
