I am launching a friend site around a small niche I like, but I am having a hard time getting people to sign up. So far I have 7 members with ok traffic in and out. The problem is that no one wants to sign up to a social networking site with so few people.

Any ideas about how I can:

#1 - Get more active members
#2 - Make the site more enticing to potential members
#3 - Market this thing in a way that is more conducive to sign ups

comic/mango/cartoon/anime social network running on a basic dating script.

Been up for 3 days. I started with 4 signups that I know. The other 3 were passerbys.

I have placed the link to the site in most of my signatures on forums about my niche, and I have been getting about 40-50 unique visits per day for the past 3 days, but no one seems to be interested in signing up.

I am thinking because there are only 7 members. I really didn't want to go the way of the fake profile, but I am starting to reconsider.

BTW, of my signups- 4 are female.

I'm a bit older than 14. Anyway, without getting too far off the track, I am studying art, and would not mind drawing comics or doing animation someday. That is another story, and another day.

Right now, I just want help getting this site off the ground.

Try the "must sign up to see inside bitch" tactic (well not in those exact words)

Try that for a day or couple hours depending on the signups you get. I don't recommend leaving it like that if you get no one signing up.

I will try that. Right now you can do everything. Search, check groups, profiles, etc. Giving people little incentive to sign up.

What about holding contests? What do you guys know about holding contest for whomever can bring in the most traffic. How does that usually work? Are there specific websites that ae used for that?

I have been able to increase my membership to 16 people. I don't think the "lock out method" was very successful, as there was not really a raise in the percentage of sign ups versus advertisement. The signups I have had thus far have been friends with an additional 1 person.

I don't really think e-whoring would work either, as this is a young adults at best type niche. Well, unless I went into teen chat rooms. I have not tried that yet. I went with the free google ads that I had with my hosting account.

20 spent and no real headway made. I need help.

Tell your friends to get their friends to sign up. If all 16 of your friends tell 16 people, you'll have 32; then 64; then... etc. I think having a contest is a good idea. If you have a contest, make sure you promote it well. Are you on any social networking sites other than the one you created? If so, tell people about it. If you live near any college campuses, make some fliers and post them. THere's a lot of stuff you can do offline to promote your site.

Hey Mckinise, how did it go with your launch? I am curious to know if you were able to take it off the ground, as I might be launching a similar friend site for latinos in my area.

I tried it with two websites. One was community based, and the other was based on a technology niche. The tech niche was fairly successful, but the community based site took off.

If you can find a couple people that are really interested in your site that may be all you need initially. I had one member get me about 15 sign ups in a week's time.

Set up an account on twiveaway.com and provide some incentives for affiliates to promote your site. For instance, set up a campaign to provide a % rev share for the person that can bring in the most members in a month or give away a cheap mp3 player with their fav cartoon theme songs on it. Think outside of the box.

Or you could do something like grab a video off of YT of a viral vid and watermark it with your website on it. republish to vid sharing sites as well as torrents. Hope this helps.

I created a member site with joomla and found a component to add as many users as you please. PM me ill send you the link to it.
