I recently launched a new site (a blog) for shits and giggles, experience, and hopefully additional income someday. I'm an SEO for an agency so I've worked with many established sites but I've never launched a new site from scratch with absolutely no links or authority of any sort. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to start gaining authority or even traffic? Anecdotes are welcomed as well, I'm just looking for ideas. I've had some success getting traffic through Stumbleupon, I've found a handful of link opportunities as well I will be pursuing and I'm also working on some social media marketing with Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest.

I want to do this as white hat as possible (which is why I'm in this section of the forums, I just trust the ingenuity of BHW more). I don't intend for this project to be any version of churn and burn, I want to actually nurture this blog from the ground up.

Thanks!!

Start with social media bookmarks, few comments on relevant blogs in your niche, some high PR properties profile, press releases.

It depends on the nature of the blog and its content. First thing you need to do is forget off-site
SEO and focus on on-site SEO backed by loads of content. Stuff it with tons of unique, high quality
post pages for a blog.

After that you might want to think about a couple of high quality press releases and focus on social
like Lord was talking about.

You should also start advertising it on Facebook since funny sites are a dime a dozen on the ad portion. Could also make a page for it on fb too.

Social, forum posts, authority links. And not much of them and very diverse anchors if not 75% raw URL.

With any long term new site, your main focus should be as said on site seo. But most importantly when it comes to link building I would just concentrate on keeping your anchor texts as diluted as possible, the links don't have to be amazing. After that you should begin to look at more authority links for the keywords your targeting.

You could easily find hundreds of active Facebook groups in your niche and generate traffic from them.

Social media is the best possible tool for you. Another are posting on blog and forums related to your niche.
