LATEST PROJECTS IN IT INDUSTRY (open source platforms)

I want to know what are the latest projects in IT industries . And which language can be considered as boon in this field. Also want to know open source applications taking rise. I am thinking to start working on open source platforms since they are on rise, need suggestions that from where can I begin? Want to know if I should focus on creating own platform or applications or work on existing one?
