I know its a difficult question to answer without actually seeing a site but what practices would you normally use to improve the SEO of a site that is already ranking high, has many pages and 40/50+ PA/DA?

Work on getting good quality links to the homepage to further increase its power and also to replace any links you eventually end up losing with time.
 
Make sure it had great levels of inter-linking(contextual, sidebar, footer) get the visitors AND keep them.
 
Try to get more high authority backlinks from editorials and link it to homepage as it will increase the domain authority further. Interlinking should be done in a proper way to keep the ranking high. Cheers!

  1. If you want to maintain high ranking for your keywords, you should update your content by adding video and images to your articles.
  2. Concentrate on your site speed. If you add more content your site may slow down. So it is important to keep on maintaining the speed of the site.
  3. Always keep watching your competitors strategies. You can be rank down if the competitors doing much more than your SEO strategies.
  4. You have to do frequent SEO audit on backlinks. You may be the victim of negative SEO attack at any time. However, google recent algorithms neglecting the major negative SEO attack.
  5. One point you have to remember "The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change". You have to be up to date on new SEO techniques.
  6. Link building is the best strategies to maintain and improve your ranking. But you have to give more concentration. it should come from a high metric site which is related to your niche.

Set your priorities and choose main keywords. You can't rank high for everything.
1. Interlink your posts. Focus on increasing strength of categories as they will help individual posts.
2. Review your post titles that improve SEO title and meta description.
3. Increase the number of articles. Example - news site can add subdomains with new niches - health.news.com, finance.news.com, cars.news.com etc.
4. Sponsor charity foundations or offer scholarship and get links from charities and universities.
Etc.
