Laptop or Desktop?

Hey bhatters!

Just wanted to know what you guys prefer for your activities? A Laptop or a Desktop?

Actually I am going to buy a new machine, but confused between the two. :confused: I've been using laptop for a year now and I feel like desktop would be better for me, for fast and comfortable typing and big monitor screen size. But is it too stressful to spend long time (upto 48 hr) on desktop sitting on the chair? I have had a desktop with me for 2 years but the time was different, just used to spend like 2-3 hr a day with PC.

I need your suggestion guys! :D

If I were in your position I would buy the destkop.
Its easier to work and more faster for internet!
 
I always prefer laptop because of its small size, easy to carry and you can work from anywhere in your room :)

Regarding the typing problem you've mentioned, well you can easily attach an USB keyboard if you really want to type fast. But the newer models laptops have very elegant keyboard, so I don't think you should face problem in fast typing or so.

My vote is always for laptop.
 
I can see the benifit of a desktop if you primarily work from home, personally i like to be mobile and work/travel so its always a laptop for me!
 
Laptop:

Pros:
-portable (as in taking outside of home/room)
-not fixed to a computer desk (able to work on couch)
-easier to keep secure (keep it with you at all times)

Cons:
-has to be a prebuilt machine (ie gateway, compaq, hp, etc)
-lower lifespan than a desktop
-unable to mix and match parts
-lower performance for your money compared to desktop
-not that great for gaming (normally)
-easier to break
-harder/more expensive to repair/upgrade

Desktop:

Pros:
-can be custom built (yourself or outsourced) for control over quality
-cheaper price for stronger performance
-easier/cheaper to repair/upgrade
-Lives longer than laptops (normally)
-more comfort (unless you have a full setup for laptop, ie keyboard, mouse, monitor docking station)

Cons:
-Stationary
-lots of wires
-big and clunky
-stuck at a desk
 
Definitely laptop for me. I can work at Starbucks, at a hotel, I can take a trip to Hawaii and work... And I don't have to sit at my desk all the time, I can take it out to the pool...you get the point.

How is a desktop faster than a laptop for internet? Lol... that would only depend on your network card. Mine is blazing fast, I usually download (wireless) 2MB/s

Also, performance wise...sure, but the laptops today are very high performance. Unless you're doing heavy video editing, 3d rendering etc, you won't really need a desktop. I can play any 3d game and work with video editing on my laptop, no problem at all.
 
Thanks guys for your input. Yes, the internet speed depends on the connectivity and what speed your ISP provides and not your system. And high end laptops are easy to work with these days. I'm thinking to get Dell XPS 17, pretty powerful! Which laptop would you recommend and please no Mac :p Yes its great but I don't want to make any adjustments with my working environment.

EDIT: I think I would go for a Desktop. I already own a Laptop so I can work as I am doing now sitting on my bed as well. Tough decision. LOL :D

For work: Desktop

When someone says 'you can take the laptop with you everywhere on holidays etc'... Why would you want to take your work with you on a holiday, holidays are for relaxing. Desktops = bigger screen(dual/triple monitor setup), more room, obviously mouse/keyboard and most important a PLACE where you work.

Take laptop everywhere = feels like you don't have a place where you go to do your business/work.

Just my experience.

Same. Using laptop lying on sofa makes me feel like I'm doing some other shit.
 
It just depends on what you are doing.

If you need something for editing audio/video or for gaming stuff, definitely go with a Desktop. Very powerful compared to laptops. But if you just browse the internet and do regular work that doesn't require much power, go with a laptop. I like my laptop because I can bring it to bed and watch tv shows/movies, browse the internet etc...
 
I use desktop and laptop, but mostly I use desktop.
laptop is more for auto tasks so I don't have to type and watch the screen much.

Same here. For work desktop, for autotasks laptop.
