The meat can be a bit tough if you dont prepare it properly. I like to brine mine for 24 hours, then let it marinate for another night. Its all about preparation.

They aren't a rodent, Rodents are part of the Rodentia order, whereas rabbits are part of the Lagomorpha order.

Interesting... still not a fan though.

Maybe its possible to acquire a taste for it, but I've had it maybe 6 times over the years and it wasn't for me.

A market near me sells them (dressed out) but they're so expensive and so small/thin I never tried it. Like, over $10 a lb so that bitty thing is $20-$30 USD. they remove all the skin and not an ounce of fat left on them so I guess the only way is to stew them.

They say rabbit is the only meat animal that equals out to a profit food to meat, paper wise.

It's actually not abuse if he kills it quickly and it's for meat. The rabbit doesn't even know it's dead. It's not like he starts cooking it while it's still alive, like a lobster.

Also this thread creeps me out. I have seen people slaughter cows, chickens and pigs. It never bothered me. I even watched that documentary that made like 60% of my friends turn vegan. Still didn't bother me. But if I saw someone kill a rabbit I'd lose my shit.

I have a few hunter type folk in my family duck, pheasant , rabbit, deer
they all can be horrible to fantastic depending on the prep and how its killed

I am curious tho
Initial cost into the rabbit game?
Amount of meat produced a year?
Your opinion on difficulty of upkeep.

Haha, I appreciate it but I'm still abroad...and to be honest making a charm takes a ton, ton, ton of work and is best done with metals like nickel, etc... (see kerises in southeast asia) that can store yin for a long period of time. A charm made out of a rabbit's foot would likely have to have a spirit attached - so not an actual charm by definition, but I appreciate it .

My Wife is French, when we visit France to see her family, we have Rabbit ... Horse ... Snails ... Frogs Legs.
All taste great.

Yeah I ate a rabbit a while ago, didn't like it much, found it a bit tough,furry and screamy...probably should have killed it, skinned it and cooked it first. Daughter wasn't too impressed, she loved old Flopsy.

I have eaten a couple of times. Unfortunately, the people who prepared didn't make a dish it deserves.

What I noticed is rabbit mean more like chicken but less fibrous

Would try again and again i am foodie and love all kinds of food except i don't want dogs cats and snakes lol

Frog legs are yummy, never tried snails tho.
Another story from my grandparents house: 1 day it was rainy, so 1 gypsy climbed over the fence to collect all the snails in our garden (they sell them to restaurants or if too desperate eat them themselves) , but my grandpa saw him and started chasing him with a big shovel dunno how the did it, but he was running so fast, that he jumped over the huge fence directly on the other side.

Never had rabbit but that is not uncommon as a protein from what I have read but I would probably pass on that as well.

Squirrel is actually really good, kind of fatty but really nice.

Some stupid hipster restaurants sell it in England. It's good for burgers.

Rabbit is also awesome.

Actually you can get into rabbits really inexpensively. The most expensive item would be a cage. Either you can buy your own materials and build it yourself, or have a pre fab cage. I spent $60 on craigslist for a really nice cage with four separate sections for housing rabbits in different areas. Usually you can then purchase a meat rabbit (depending on what breed) between $15-$30 per rabbit. I actually got mine for free. Its possible to find people that will just get rid of them. Of course this is for meat, so you will want to get some sort of meat breed. I have Rex rabbits, which are one of the more popular meat breeds.

All you need is two rabbits to start (a male and a female) Nature will take its course when you introduce the two of them. Always introduce the female into the males area (females can be territorial and attack), The female rabbit can have babies every 30 days. On average 6 a litter. Rex rabbits can weigh between 9 to 15 pounds. When the babies are 10 weeks old you separate them from the mother. I also separate them putting males in one cage and females into another. Rabbits are considered matured for slaughter at 12 weeks. A rabbit would be considered full adult by 1 year old. I typically slaughter the rabbit at 16 weeks. I spend approximately $3 per rabbit for food each month. So approximately for each rabbit I raise I spend $12 for food, for an average of 10 pounds of meat @ $10-$15 per pound.
