Keywords in Meta Tags

What is best for meta-tags assuming you were selling hammers and wrenches in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan and wanted to rank for hammers brooklyn, hammers queens, etc....

<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="hammers, wrenches, brooklyn, queens, manhattan">

OR

<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="hammers brooklyn, hammers queens, hammers manhattan, wrenches brooklyn, wrenches queens, wrenches manhattan">

Meta keywords tag is not used in ranking, best to leave empty.

Search engines only use it to catch out spammers who stuff millions of words into it. Leaving it empty makes your site seem more natural, less spammy.

I agree.

Also try not repeat your keywords over and over again, only use once or twice in a page. Start the content on the page with a keyword, end the content on the page with a keyword.
 
I definitely glean keyword ideas from my competitors meta tags. Didn't realize that there was no memoir in populating the tag myself though.

Am gonna try it on a site and see if theres any drop.
 
So let me get this right you all are saying leave the meta keywords in you site empty?

So much animosity towards meta tags i know they are not worth much these days but only used to sort out spam sites...Seriously?

There are WP tools like all in one seo etc.. That give you ratings for an article based on keyword density, h1 tags etc, and one of the rating increases is based on keyword in meta tag, this is from a highly rated seo company.

I don't have knowledge of googles algorythm to make a real deduction here but I am guessing its still worth something. Worst case scenario you waste 30 seconds typing it in?

Be sure that you can use more than one keywords in your meta keywords. Most famous websites use about 4-5 keywords and its OK.
 
i think using 2 or 3 keyword phrases rather than words is practical. However, this meta tag is not important at all imho.
 
Wait a minute there :).

meta keyword is not important for google as they claim it publicly.

That said, I always fill it for 2 purposes :

1) It helps others serps engines
2) it may not be a ranking factor but it still can be a semantic factor. So yes you will display your keywords to the public which we are all used to sniff, but i still fill it in order to let google know what the content will be about, in case the robots goes through it, which according to me makes perfect sense.

Dealing with OP question, i always go for keywords phrases instead of just one keyword. Google is smart enough to understand concepts and doesn't take the meaning words by words.
 
Google have discounted meta keywords and there's nothing wrong in putting keywords on it or leaving it empty either. But if you're very competitive and you don't want your competition to find out which keywords you're using, just leave them blank,

I think I will leave them out and let google index my sites naturally
 
Nope, you should proper SEO your site. You should not leave it. proper indexed your site. take help of backlinksindexer for linking and giving good result.
 
It don't have any kind of good effect like previous days :)
So you can add as much as you can in the tag. Google don't read them.
Its a good trick to disturb your competitors :)

You are mistaken.

Google does not use this tag but some search engines do use it since people quit spamming it years ago.

Using meta-keyword tags is a sign of a good web developer. Some search engines will use them, some may in the future, and since it does not count as a penalty, it should be included in your pages.

And to answer the OP, you should put the keywords in there that you are targeting in the page content. Hopefully it will be a traffic keyword.

I spoke to someone last week who was really worried that their ranking fell for the keyword "XXXX RV sewage pump" which gets no search volume.

I suggested concentrating on "RV sewage pumps" instead the brand name, but no, she wants to get that ranking back. Completely misses the whole point of SEO, but you cant explain anything to a person who suffers from selective deafness.

With all due respect, one quick read of the page source will tell you what keywords anyone is targeting.

Generally for the record in most IMers I have met, when we "keyword" we really mean "keyword phrase (yes it can be a single keyword but usually isn't)", and when we say "tags" we mean single keywords.
 
meta keywords tag is not used by google, bing, or by extension (since bing provides results for them now) yahoo, it is only utilized by them as a way to tell what you are trying to optimize for, and penalize you for it.
trust me here, do not use it, there is no benefit, there is only a drawback, you do absolutely need to have description tag, and it MUST be unique for each page, and you should include as many of the terms you would like to rank for in it as you can while still sounding normal, and enticing people to click your link
