You need to have the exact keyword in your article and the keyword density should be at least 2%.

Agree. You need a certain percentage of the exact keyword.

Also it's good to have combinations like you said op, and also related keywords. All of those factors are taken into consideration by google when determining relevance.

Competitive parity can vary from keyword to keyword so you have measure overtime if you want to maximize your effectiveness and minimize your effort.

You also need to consider what Google considers a match. Fortunately Google makes the matches it sees bold in the search results. So for your example we find the following match words:
    • detox
    • detox green tea
    • detox tea
    • detox teas
    • detoxing
    • green
    • green detox
    • green detox tea
    • green tea
    • green tea detox
    • green teas
    • greentea
    • greenteas
    • tea
    • tea detox
    • teas
The average result on page 1 has the following:
    • 704 matches throughout the HTML source.
    • 137 matches within sentences.
    • 50 Sentences per page (so multiple matches per sentence.)
    • etc…
For your example “green tea detox” I found these correlations:
    • Strong Correlation: Tune pages for matches in web page title tag with a value of at least 6
    • Strong Correlation: Tune pages for exact matches in web page H3 tags with a value greater than 0
    • Strong Correlation: Tune pages for exact matches in web page H1 to H3 tags with a value greater than 0
    • Strong Correlation: Tune pages for copyright in web page with a value of at least 1
    • Strong Correlation: Tune pages for apple touch icon in web page with a value greater than 0
    • Strong Correlation: Tune pages for matches in web page alt attributes with a value of at least 3
    • Strong Correlation: Tune pages for matches in web page first 100 words with a value of at least 12
    • Strong Correlation: Tune pages for matches in Google result display URL with a value of at least 5
    • Strong Correlation: Tune pages for matches in Google result link text with a value of at least 5
    • Strong Correlation: Tune pages for matches in Google result summary text with a value of at least 5
    • Strong Correlation: Tune pages for matches in web page article tags with a value of at least 42
    • Strong Correlation: Tune pages for exact matches in web page li tags with a value of at least 1
    • Strong Correlation: Tune pages for matches in web page article tags with a value of at least 42
    • Weak Correlation: Tune pages for matches in web page H1 tags with a value from 4 to 5
    • Weak Correlation: Tune pages for exact matches in web page A tags with a value of 1
    • Weak Correlation: Tune pages for hreflangs in web page HTML source with a value of 1

Here is a screenshot of the correlation data:

If you have "green tea detox" at 2% and you also have "green" and "tea" and "detox" and variations of "green tea detox" sprinkled in you are going to be WAY the fuck overoptimized. Include it a few times, but also include variations of it, as well as "green" and "tea" and "detox" separately. I would not go with the suggested 2% in any way, shape, or form. Keyword density is outdated and Google can tell what your article is about even if you don't have the exact phrase in there a million times. Tbh if you're starting you can write naturally and you will be more than fine.

You DON'T need a certain percentage of the keyword in the text.

You DO need to use it at least once, preferably in the title and once in the text.

You DO need to use variations and related terms to build the contextual relevance.

You DO need to make sure it reads as a human would write for a human to read.

If your article is around 700 - 1000 words then use the exact match keyword atleast twice and break it and sprinkle it around few times in the rest of the content. Tip: Do place the exact match keyword in the first 250 characters of the article.

Whenever I'm having my article written, I'll only have the keyword put in twice.
