I've just tried the Keyword Planner for the first time, and it's giving me monthly search results for keywords that are no where near the same as what the Keyword Tool gives me. Does the Keyword Planner show different search results, or am I missing something here?

Don't know. I also decide to give it a go (yesterday) and wasn't satisifed so I left it after 5 minutes. I am gonna use KW tool as long as I can

Keyword Planner now shows total(combining local with global traffic) average per month instead of separate stats.
If you dont have a kw list/txt you need to constantly hit back and type your kw's and put [] around them to be exact match, but for generating kw ideas/related kw's its good.

Your question brings to mind what happened when a large change to the keyword tool was made in 2010. Google started basing its data on different Google properties. Make sure you are are using the same "match type" for both.

I'll be honest...I've never really gotten along with Google Adwords tool too well. The suggestions it offers me are too raw that it takes a considerable time out of my schedule to clean the list. I'll paste an example (for the EXACT set of keywords. My niche: dog training):
List of a few Groups returned by Google Adwords Keyword Tool
- Training Classes
- Clicker
- Leash Dog
- Aggressive
- Training Online
- Therapy
- Agility Dog
- Keywords like Dog Training Charlotte nc

List of a few Groups returned by Keyword Country
- Dog Behavior training
- Dog Training School
- Dog training tips
- Potty training dog
- Dog training books
- Dog Training Supplies

Isn't this difference in Keywords like...tooooo BIG?
