Keyword stuffing

So when i check out some of my current competitors for one of my sites they are stuffing keywords for fun inside ALT images etc. They have ten images with the same Keyword as well as having it spread throughout the content.

Must be way above 5% density maybe even higher.

Yet, they rank in the top 5 for quite a few different keywords and they do this on a lot of their pages.

Why are we only advised to be sub 1% for our keyword density when there is sites out there doing higher?

What density do you aim for ? I may push one of my pages up to 3% and judge the impact.

I do wonder whether keyword stuffing is sometimes a little over hyped. I haven't been in the game as long as yourself but even i am seeing too many people being lead by the blind.

My competitor has the exact same keyword in ALT texts 32 times in only 10 pictures lol. Plus it looks like they've written in a H2 text so have it more in them. They must have a 10% density and it doesn't seem to be hurting their rankings!
 
Maybe i was over exagerating a little with 10% its more likely around 3 - 4% including ALT.

But since the ALT isn't directly in the text does it count towards keyword stuffing?

Nope it does not... I've been using Image SEO like that for years and it is a dirty little secret I have for ranking my sites.

Google is fine with it for some reason (it will die at some point I am sure) and it works wonders for almost any niche.

I try not to abuse it but there are times when I've had too much coffee it gets out of hand.

Your alt text is commentary that G sees and ties it to your site and your image so if you have a site that is targeted towards something visual it is really a necessity.
 
The best thing to do is to replicate your competitors cuz thats the proof of concept of what google likes to see inorder to display for your keyword. Dont get trapped in this idea of "keyword stuffing" and other overhyped words. Just make sur e you are better than your competitors in all aspects and naturally you will rank higher. That's what software like CORA was designed to do and something I preach to every SEO. Look at how the top 5 are optimizing. Emulate and surpass.

You mean my money sites?

That is probably not a good idea.

As to sites where I serve clients those are the only two that are for general consumption; I have a bunch that are niche related SEO service sites but those are not connected to my public persona here.

Not money sites, more like blogs where you share your SEO ideas/marketing ideas

Those are the only 2 that I share on that are general sites; I have a handful that are niche related that I target certain industries but I market those in those industries and not in the general arena + I use a pen name that is not related to the sites you know about from here.

I'm big on making sure that the industry that I am targeting gets the impression that I am the industry go to guy for SEO and that helps a ton in closing sales.

I guess you wouldn't want to reveal your pen name to me but if you are comfortable I would love to read your stuff of agency/local/leads

Of course not... I won't reveal to anyone.

It is not a personal thing by any means it is a business decision.

Those in the XYZ niche industry(s) that know me as my username(s) there know that I am an authority in SEO for their industry.

I have dedicated sites for those industries, create content that is specific to those industries and wear a hat that reflects my involvement and knowledge in those industries.

Not much different than (don't take this as me comparing what I offer to who they are because I'm small potatoes compared to them or almost anyone) GM who has a variety of brands of vehicles yet fall under the one umbrella.
 
Frankly I've noticed that a LOT of reputable high-ranking sites keyword stuff in my opinion. Especially in very specific niches. I'm not sure if Google has loosened up on it, or if it's because the quality of content and relevance in relation to percentages... but as long as it reads well and in in line with my top 20 competitors I don't even worry about stuffing these days. Whatever is natural and useful has worked for me.

According to Yoast, you're going to want to keep your keyword density between 0.5 and 2.5%. You could copy the article from your competitor's site into the Yoast analysis tool, that will tell you the exact density. Perhaps the text density is under 2.5% but the images add to it?

I can't pretend to know all of the ins and outs of SEO and what search engines really prioritize. In fact, I've always relied on tools like Yoast to figure that out. However, my main issue with keyword stuffing isn't related to SEO but rather to the user experience. How did you feel when you were reading through the stuffed article? Personally, I think readers find it disconcerting, to say the least, when they run into that kind of content.

But hey, if it works for SEO, it works. I'd like to know whether overstuffing your content would lead to a higher ranking.
