What exactly is it? Is it effective? Is there a proper way to do it?

I stumbled across a few articles about it online but not sure if Im actually getting it. Any help would be great.

It's just about finding good keywords to build your site. Mostly - longtail ones

The idea behind keyword sniping is choosing a single keyword and setting up an entire site/blog or group of sites to rank for just one keyword. Not a good idea.

With this in mind, beware of something called keyword cannibalization - this happens when one or two pages on your site are competing for the same keyword which will throw you off the search engines esp. G
