Hi Guys,

Im looking to do some keyword research using google keyword planner for my ecommerce website. I havent done it before but im getting to grips with it slowly. What I want to know is should I be targeting keywords for SEO and PPC purposes which get between 500 to 2500 searches per month or go for higher searches for example 95000 searches per month? My budget isnt exactly massive so what tips can someone give me when it comes to targeting keywords? All advice most appreciated. :)

Thanks

first try finding long tails with 1000-3000 MS , rank them . Then move above. It's a slow process but you learn a lot . And seo and ppc are completely different ball games.

Thanks Divok

When you say rank them, you mean order them from highest to lowest?

I usually target the easier ones to rank at first and build up a trust level with Google as I move onto the harder ones.

I take it the easier ones to target would be the ones with the least monthly searches right?

While search volumes may be directly proportional with keyword competitiveness, it may not always be so. It is therefore better to check competition of all search volumes to identify the best ones to proceed further with.

Thanks Matthew SEO Geek. All of the keywords Ive seen in my genre are all high competition. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Do you provide SEO services Matthew or can you recommend anyone?

I am not overly concerned when I begin a site if the KWs are going to be high or low in terms of monthly searches... my main concern is a niche that I will continue with and one that I can generate a lot of monthly searches.

High competition is going to be tough for you with a newer site.

When you say high competition you mean the that's what google keyword planner shows you? If so, then it's a good thing.

Yes thats what i mean lord1027. So should i target KW that have say for example 6000 searches per month? Would it not be easier to target KW that are 1000 - 3000 per month?

Are you talking about PPC or SEO? I'm unclear what you're asking as they're entirely different.

Go for the low competitive keywords first, they are much easier to rank, and with good on page seo,you should start to rank on top 100,within 2-3 days with no links at all
