Regarding Keywords, when I'm using the g@@gle keyword tool, I find several Keywords that have Average to low competition.

But the searches are low. One is in the 22,000's and the rest are 5000 searches or less.

Is there a general rule of thumb when considering a keyword. Would I be wasting my time on keywords with Low Search volume? Or could these be considered highly targeted? Im not going to use PPC, strictly SEO.

Any opinions or pointers would be appreciated. THX.

if the keyword is targeted and has low competition, than i would go after it. even if it has low search volume.

a keyword with only 200 searches/month that is targeted and has low competition is more valuable to me than an untargeted keyword with high competition and 100,000 searches a month.

if you have 5 of the type of keyword i mentioned above(the good ones), you'll be getting 10,000 searches a month. the beauty is that if you did your SEO right, you'll be dominating the SERPs for those keywords.

To Hawke,

When you notice that those keywords have low competition take a look at how many pages are indexed by Google and if the numbers exceed 300 thousand move on to the next thing.

Can you elaborate or point to a good seo guide that deals with this. i.e. when or when not to enter a niche market.

I started about year ago with e marketing and one long tail keyword I was targeting caused me to move way up for for the main keyword. Page 1 in fact,

That is the good news!

The bad news is I'm not sure I know why :)

what was the keyword? don't worry i wont steal it from you.
if you want to PM it to me. if not that's cool, but i'd have to guess. and my guess would be that the keyword has little competition.

Nope sorry I can't tell you. But the keyword has plenty of competition.

4 million results without quotes!

It is an ebay store. So I imagine that has something to do with it.

It fluctuates between page 1 and page 2. on Yahoo and page 3 on Google

no harm. it might be the fact that it's an ebay store. that may help.

how much competition without quotes?

Thanks for the response's. I was teetering the fence of what to do, just needed a push. :)

I'm going to assume that's what SENuke is doing when you "check Competition" and get a YAY or NAY suggestion?

Another thing that helped me is that one of the articles I wrote was picked up a few times and I use the forums related to that niche

different people will have different experiences...the only thing off the top of my head that sounds like it answers your question would that 'keyword sniping' method...in a nutshell:

pick a keyword
search with quotes, and eliminate if >100k results
if < or = to 100k, search without quotes
if any of the top results (1-5) have the phrase in the title or url and are above PR2, drop the phrase and move on

ive done a similar practice for a few sites, also adding in estimated CPC ROI to further refine my options
