I use Link Assistanse's Rank Tracker for my keyword research projects. It has 2 options for SEO and PPC metrics. Due to Google's keyword Planner chamges you won't get the exact monthly search volume but you are able to discover 100's of keywords that people are searching with KEI for each keyword.

Rank Tracker (as a part of SEO PowerSuite) can be a good choice. It uses 20 different keyword research tools (Keyword Planner, Keyword Discovery, Google/Bing Autocomplete and Related Searches, etc.) to give you a diverse keyword list of hundreds of high-converting, low-competition long tail keywords.

Check out Ferzy.com as well, it's free for up to 10 searches per day, and provides you with everything you need to do keyword research, exact search volume, keyword difficulty score, long tails, etc..

That's cool, do you know where it pulls the search volume from? The AdWords API?

Yeah thanks for posting ferzy - Going to give the a look.

SEMRUSH, SeoCockpit and KWfinder are the best ranked in 2017 and i have used KWfinder, the best thing about it is that it offers you free dedicated plans as well so nothing could be cool for freelancer than it.

Honestly there are not many good free tools. You could look at Google Keyword Planner. Personally, I use KWFinder and Ahrefs in a combo. Both very awesome tools, but priced accordingly.
