Hi, I was just wondering how accurate is Google Keyword Planner when it comes to competition? I know this is just to give an idea of adwords bid, but is there any good correlation with difficulty to rank as well? They have a "high" and "low" for many keywords, but it is surprising because in the niche I am researching right now, some high volume words are "low" while some . How do you rate your competition in a given niche? Do you check out their backlinks and do further research before building a website or do you think the GKP is enough?

Finding the difficulty of a keyword is the basis of a good SEO campaign. There are software (some free in the downloads section) that can help you.
Use GKP to get a decent list of keywords. Check the exact match results in Google: "keyword in quote marks". Generally the less exact match results the easier the keyword may be to rank. under 50k is a good number.
Probably the best metric of keyword difficulty that you can get for free is SpyFu.com. Anything under 200 is good.

3. Analysis the domain backlinks with spy competitor tool or service such as "seo seo spyglass, ahrefs, majestic seo"
4. Now it's your time to overcome on the competitor's work

High volume keywords are often have low adv competition because they are often very generic.

I disagree. If you use the Majestic SEO on the keyword analysis section, forget ALL the other options, it will give you a very quick overview of keyword difficulty in bulk very quickly.
Say you have 20,000 keywords, it will analyse this in 30 seconds, export the results to Excel, sort the data and pick the top 1000 keywords or so. From there you can do more detailed analysis knowing the keywords are likely to be easier.

this is also a good indicator of keyword difficulty, but hard to do on a large scale, ie, more than 100 keywords at a time. It also does not give a clear indicator of actual keyword difficulty.
For example, you may find a keyword with very few exact match results, results in title and url, but it may be a EDU related keyword, with very high PA and DA pages in the top 10.
I can categorically say one of the only difficulty metrics that has a correlation is SpyFu.com or Moz (Moz is paid).
