Hi Guys,

I understand it is all about keyword ranking, but I am unable to find a clear cut plan on how you can take a keyword phrase and boost your ranking for it.

Everything I have read says how important it is, but I am lost as to how the heck I gain rankings.

Example keyword phrase I want to rank for is: call of duty patch

What is not next step exactly?

-My web site has allot of imcoming backlinks, 80% off my traffic comes from them.
-UV, about 2500 daily
-I just got into google news

So those are the highlights, so I think I have the site to easily back the keywords and posts to go with it.

I just don't know what the next step or leap is?

If your target keyword for a page is "call of duty patch" then you need to do this at least:

On Page:

  • Include it in the title tags of page, closer to the beginning

  • Include it in the meta description of the page, close to the beginning

  • Include it in the page with at least 2% kw density but not over 5% density

  • make it bold somewhere on the page

  • include the kw in image names and image alts

  • include the kw in an html comment

Off page
Get other sites to link to your site using the anchor text "call of duty patch". Preferably from another call of duty site or gaming site, etc.. Try and keep the theme the same as the links are coming from

Theres plenty of other stuff you can do but the main key is getting sites to link to you using your anchor text.

Onpage SEO is mandatory. The keyword you are going after is quite competitive so you will need tons of anchored inbound links.

Go to the services for sale and find people that might be able to help you.

And grats for being accepted in the google news:)

Thanks guys, very much appreciated!!

I thank you both too! I have wanted some clarity on this myself as well and this thread has come at a good time! I love how every time I pop in here, I find something very useful!

H1, H2, H3 - Switch a few of those anchors up a little "Patch for Call of Duty", "Call of Duty Patch", "Patches for call of Duty", "Call of Duty Patches" - But keep with the main one 8 out of 10 times. When you rank for the main one, might as well get them all.

Though you are getting more back links, make sure that it does not contain any spam links.
Increase in keyword helps in high ranking as you said just do a keyword research and use most related keywords that can be a low competition keyword which helps to rank your site easily.
Using WordStream for keyword research, you'll be able to leverage your own website data to form a Keyword database that is,
