I think I found a great Niche. My only real competitor is ranking for everything I search( his one main article is covering all my search terms I input}

So Should I just ahrefs his URL and take all his keywords he is showing for and use those keywords right?

p.S wHIch I did and am wondering if this is how to attack?

Most likely, besides his backlinks profile and on page.

I'd start with keyword research, find about 30 low-competition keywords with some volume.
Then I go doing the competitor analysis based on these keywords, make sure to research a few locations and not just your main one.
After you've found everything, see where your main competitor is ranking and if there's room to extend your kwd research. If there are forums in your niche, forums are very often ranking for a lot of low competition keywords and are worth researching too.

If it's a meaty article, target a different set of keywords
Ahrefs is more than enough to help you with that

Yes, you could find the keywords your competitor is using, but wouldn't recommend just copy-pasting it to your site, as even that way you will have to wait to overcome his rankings, he will always be a favorite for showing up first, as he/she has a solid website authority and is present longer on the web. Try to use different keywords variations, see if there is some gap they are not filling in, find other phrases that could be useful and that have a high monthly search volume.

Other members already stated the most important. I would also check his website for hidden backlinks and which anchor texts those are using.

Look for questions that people would naturally ask based around his articles and throw them into the mix.

Ideally you want to make your site the "Oracle" for all things related to your niche.

Use sm to spark debate/ interest/ humour around your articles and niche.

Much appreciated everyone who answered. Gives me hope there are still great people out there!!
