I'd like to get top-10 rankings for the keyword "news". That is a very, very difficult keyword. Is there anything I can do, white hat or black hat? I mean any reasonable thing.

one word keywords are loose cannons, and even if you are #1, you'll probably get untargeted traffic (although #1 news would be great :) )

Think about keywords that are more precise, like "read news online" or "news africa" or "celebrity news" or something, and even all of those will be tough to rank

Yeah, I would like to get a couple of big keywords to drive to my news related web site to have it become big. I wonder if it's possible.

So nobody thinks it's feasible?

Try contacting the SAPE network owner. He might help you get there quick within few days. J/K.

On a serious note, the keyword "news" is a really tough keyword and only the big players in the market aim for it since that required a really big investment and takes a lot of time to reach #1 if you use whitehat methods.

Thanks top post

I can see where you are coming from OP but one word keywords invariably are just like GiorgioB states above take his advice and guidance and you will not go far wrong...

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I guess it was worth a try to ask.

Dude, being #5 for this keyword will be huge but do you think you could beat sites like google, cnn, bbc, yahoo? Hell Nah!

I might be able to get you on the first page of goog for the kw news. no promises. pm me if interested.

I would start with targeting a low competition long tail lsi keyword of "News" eg " good local news" ( that is just a guess ) - i would try to rank for this first as you will need a lot less authority, backlinks, likes, shares etc. Once you rank for a low comp keyword you need to make sure your user metrics like bounce rate is low and time on site is high. Once you do this you will find it easier to rank for terms like "news".

don't let these people feed into your pipe dream. have you even looked at the top 10 results? be realistic. these websites are TV Stations, or yahoo...etc.

It's definitely difficult word! try to use low frequency keywords- they'll be easier to promote and u'll get more targeted traffic...
