Heys guys, I've been browsing and reading the forums for a while, and I've absorbed a lot of information in a short period of time. I've figured I'm gonna try to do a wordpress blog, and I've been following bluematter's thread. I've found a nice niche to explore, and I have 2 or 3 nice keywords I want to build around.

When google searching these keywords all the pages have a really low PR, the highest being a PR4 website, but they're all old pages, most of them dating from around 1998-2000. Should I proceed to try and explore this niche? I'm a newb in SEO, and I'll be trying to learn how to do it myself whilst probably buying a couple of services to help me follow the right path. Basically, do you think I can rank my niche blog against these really old but low PR websites?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

It's really impossible for us to say. The best advice I can give you if you're new to this is "don't overthink it". Just go for it and see what happens. You either rank or you don't, and adjust accordingly. Getting stuck in the niche selection phase is a _really_ common mistake I think, way too easy to spend hours over-analyzing things instead of getting down in the trenches and just trying it.

Well sometimes old websites are very authoritative, but in other cases it means there is no competition.

Head over to spyfu.com and put your keyword in there it will give you some info on how hard the keyword is.

Thanks for the help guys. I really do feel I was stuck at choosing a niche/keywords, but I'll play along. I'm gonna buy a domain and start the work. Even if this one fails, I'll have the experience to do better the next time.
