The Keyword Golden Ratio is one way to tell how many pages are going directly at a given keyword, but with Google and how there is semantic indexing so results are based partially on what a searcher means and not literally those exact keywords, does KGR apply less recently?

KGR is just one indicator, but is it just a little tougher to tell if you could rank with a new page with even more factors now?

KGR is an indicator only. A good one though.

If a KGR keyword has no or little relevant results, go for it.

For example if a kgr term is for a product review, and no reviews come up only eCommerce, then its an instant ranker. --

I don't think anyone really has an answer after last update.

You'll just have to go outthere and try it on a few. See what happens.

KGR was a very solid concept before Hummingbird (although, I'm not sure the term "KGR" had been coined at that point, but the KGR concept has been around forever). KGR has still worked fine for the most part, because you tend to still be going for very specific phrases, with very specific intent. I use KGR as a signal that a keyword might be worthwhile, but I still do competition analysis on the serp (not using the allintitle).

I've ranked numerous "KGR" terms over the years, so it has worked fine, but there are a lot of terms that I don't go after because if you look at the SERPs, you can just tell they are too strong (obviously, this will depend on the site you're trying to rank).

I haven't published any new KGR since the most recent update, so I can't address what @tiiberius is saying above, but my existing KGRs still look good. I agree with tiiberius though: test, test, test.

I wrote an article for a KGR term yesterday with 400 search volume.

Was ranked within 12 hours, and I got 12 impressions today from it, I can verify this worked

my site also use KGR. from 20 post. 4 get featured snippet, and 4 top 3, and the rest on page one or two. so i think it is also a good strategy. but it need more articles.

Nice! Well, there you go @Zooker, recent data for you. Now, you just need to do the work and reap all the benefits :)

That's a "Wedding Singer" reference for anyone who is thoroughly creeped out about my choice in GIF.

Thanks for all the great replies everyone. It's great to see that it still plays in as one of the factors.

I took a bit of time yesterday with a list of about 100 or so terms that were long-tail and doing the KGR calculations for step 1 on them and I think I have a list of about 30 or so keywords that fit well within the numbers to check by hand now.

I just have to look them over now and find the low-hanging fruit. This post https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/u...analyse-serp-and-keyword-competition.1118710/ looks like it has a good list of things to check beyond basic relevance.

So I'm off and testing! I'll post updates in a few days with what I hope are some ranking articles.
