How much keyword density is too much?

I was told to aim for around 4 percent long ago, and it always seems like way too much, so I hover around 2-2.5% is this enough?

Im trying to rank for a relatively competitive keyword, so im debating on whether or not to bump the density. Would bumping it to 4% hurt it?

There are a few more questions in there.

I more want to know if anyone has seen any benefit in bumping the density to around 4 %

Yes, I did - but ONLY when running campaigns with AdCenter. For everything else that should be a no-go, since google's algorithms do check on that 3% 'magical kw-density threshold'.
