On some of my pages, the density of the word 'he' or 'she' is about 12% for a page/article of about 300 words. Obviously, my keywords are not 'he' or 'she', but will it hurt me or look like spam with these words as high as %12-%15 in density?

This is a good question. I made some experiments with this, and believe that especially for one word long only keywords only (like "seo" for example), the ultra high keyword density is one of the best ways how to occupy the top spots. But it also depends on te structure on your site. If it's a one page site, I will not go for it. If you have many pages on your site, and make 2-3 with such a high density, it can bring decent result. Best of luck!

Defnitely "he" or "She" is never counted as your keyword and doesn't refer to your pages keyword density. The keywords you are putting on your meta tags will counted and those keyword density would be considered and page relevancy with keyword is determined based on your meta keywords or tags whatever you are putting. Hope that clears your query.

I wouldn't worry about the density of non-relevant kw.

But if you have a kw density at 15% for "he", then might you consider if your article is well written!

I always thought 3-4 percent was the rule ?

I usualy use 3-6% keyword density on my and my clients pages and I never had any problems. I doubt that the kind of keywords like she or he or and etc. may have any negative impact on your sites. Don't worry too much about things like those, google is smarter than you think.

Cheers

Meta tags are no longer taken into consideration.

Small words like he or she I would assume are only taken into consideration if searched for (as is any word?)

I usually aim for 2-5% KD however there will be a number of words that are 2% KD that I would never even think of although I assume if the phrase "he likes that" is searched for and my article has it as 3% KD (my main KW might be 4/5%) then google may still see "he likes that" as the keyword of the post.

This is of course assuming no other SEO has been employed, if your title, navigation titles, anchors etc. all say otherwise, then the case would be different.

You don't need any more than 3% kw density. Any more than that is waaaay to much. Make use of title's, h1's, bold's, and KW'ds in hyperlinks. These are the most important factors.
