After I find a keyword I want to target using google planner, which is the best way to find out my competition for that keyword?

I tend to use Long Tail Pro these days to give me an initial idea of the competition. It'll show me the top ten results with the number of 'juice' links, DA etc - enough to give me an indication on whether it's high/low competition anyway.

Just look at the top 5 results in ahrefs. Check out the backlink profiles and determine whether you can do better. Simple as that. The hard part is determing what constitutes a good and bad linking profile.

Get Traffic Travis tool and check your keyword competition.

It's always good to apply some manual checks too.

However, the top 10 site on the SERP for your term are your true competitors.

Pick each of the URL and check their:

    Page rank
Amount of quality backlinks using SPYGlass
    Age
    On-site SEO
    Among others...............

I'm sure others will respond alike..

I use Market Samurai to check PR, DA and many other parameters. They offer free trial, and you can get limitless trials with a method available here on forums.
SeoQuake Firefox plugin is also great for manual checking your top 10 competition domains.

My choice is "Word tracker" for the keyword competition.

As almost everyone has said, LongTailPro is a good choice. BUT, you don't need it. I do most of my research using the SEO Quake toolbar and simply analyzing the first page. Do they have the keywords in their title, URL, description? If so, lots of people are gunning for that keyword. If not, not as many people are targeting it. The top 5 is where you should focus most of your attention. I analyze them using SEO Quake and a quick visual look over, then copy/paste into Market Samurai to analyze how many links they have to that page. Identifying authority sites that rank based on authority versus links is important too. They're harder to outrank.

Last time I checked Google Planner shows the competition of the keywords you are targeting so I would use that.
