Keyword Competition - what to look for?

Which would you guys say is the stiffer of the competition?

H1 tag, Description & Title SEO
Higher PR (anything between 0-4)
Lots of backlinks to the page

If some experienced people can let me know their thoughts. I'll be the first to admit I'm an SEO newbie, so I'm just trying to get a good rule of thumb to go after, or move on.

I know it is a combination of them, but what I'm looking for is if there is some PR 0 site with no backlinks, but has H1 tag ,Desc, Title SEO at #1 then go for that.

Well, what for is this:

The amount of searches it gets
The CPC for your keyword
the trends for past search data
amount of pages when you search in google for your kw

Then for competitors.

analyze the top 10 competitors for the KW's. If there are a bunch of sites ranking with no backlinks and no EMD's then you've probably found a good niche.

I like traffic travis, but I've never personally tested MNF so theres my 2 cents.

For Example

Keyword = Berry Benefits
Domain = http://berrybenefits.com/.net/.org
