Keep getting slapped down on rank after it's on first page

There's an ecommerce site that I'm maintaining and every time a new item is loaded, it climbs to first page and sometimes #1, after a few days it gets slapped hard. Is there a way to find out why?

Any ideas will be helpful. I don't know why it keeps doing this, it's done this for a few hot selling items and then out of nowhere it just gets penalized. I don't do any bh on it, just standard posts to social network channels, tumblr, fb, pinterest all manually done

Are you using unique content for your item description etc.?
 
there's 2 items that are slightly similar, they have minimal changes in the item description, that could very well be it. Wouldn't think that it would actually slap it that fast for that.
 
What you are seeing is called a honeymoon. New pages often rank well at first, them settle lower into a solid ranking. Happens with new sites as well.

Dulicate descriptions will hurt rankings on both pages.
 
also in some niches u may be gettign manual kills
 
It's literally dancing, same day, it'll be back at #1, then de-rank, and then do it again. I redid the descriptions to try and make it more unique. If I did a linkbuild on this, will it make it stick?
 
Google fluctuating = bouncing rank - you'll have some headaches until will stabilize. You should keep promoting and verify the negative backlinks that can appear anytime
 
I'm scared to try and do regular backlink building such as promoting on tumblr, pinterest or manual linking because I don't know if it will sandbox it :(
 
How old is the website? Check your banklink profile with a tool. See if you're being hit by a competitor.
 
I would see the glass half-full, not half empty.
If you jump to number one with new products, it means Google likes something you do about your website... Think about it. The key may be there.

Get quality links, original content, and relevant links.

The best way to do this is to build a web 2.0 networks or private network comprising of aged domain and solely for your use not like the high risk blog network.
