Bloody lockdowns got my brain thinking on high gear. Why are these unicorn SaaS companies hiking prices lately? To keep their investors happy? Or to keep their salespeople happy? Why would a company need heavily paid salespeople if they offer decent services and keep the price low? I think it should be possible to offer the $299/month plans for $299 a year when we kill the unnecessary overheads.
We go with a managed enterprise distributed cloud host like InterNap who would take care of all the server stuff and security to host WPMU and the db, and then a CDN for the images and shit. The wordpress installation would have woocommerce preconfigured to a certain extent, and the additional plugins required to create products and link images from links from a csv. Hire a UX guy and make him redesign the backend to make the wordpressishness go away and BOOM! we have a Shopify competitor. A smooth and minimal UI with very few but important options in the settings and a stable backend is all that it takes to retain nontechy clients. We do it the Apple way where less is more and give clients about 20 generic and easily customizable themes max to pick from. We might need to hire a few php guys to code a some reporting plugins and stuff that aren't available opensource. We can always do the partnership offers that they're offering for shipping and payment processing once we hit some volumes.
Scan twitter for people bitching about Shopify, offer them a 7 day trial, make em pay, sit back, relax, count the money and live happily ever after. Ok its not as easy as that.
We could make this as a regular site builder too like squarespace, offer it cheaper than them as well. Build invoicing and bookkeeping platforms too eventually.
If it gets big we get to talk to VCs to pump up the valuation and sell the company. The downside is quite low.
I bring my promotional skills while you bring your dev skills. I'll take care of the hosting costs until we see revenue too. I'm kind of looking for a few people to work with on this primarily for brainstorming, not that I can't hire a few php guys too if I wanted to.
Anyone want to work with me on this?
