I am reading thread after thread over the last few days/weeks regarding people with (IMO) insane traffic yet make next to nothing. I am talking people getting 5,000, 10,000 and even some saying they are getting 20,000+ per day but then earning peanuts.

My questions are this, what kind of traffic is this? What kind of products are you pushing? What does your site look like?

I work with a company we operate THREE sites and barely get over 1,000 unique visits per day but we make around $15,000+ per day. YES we own our own products but even our affiliates who may or may not have more traffic are earning $10,000+ per month in commissions.

I am wondering how can you get such big numbers of visitors and no or little sales? I know one of our affiliates tried to buy some sub premium PPC traffic (not bing/yahoo/google) and raised traffic really high but her conversions were terrible meaning she got traffic (which then came to us) but no conversions. Is this what is going on?

Curious minds want to know....

You can see those niches clearly on Twitter - Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, etc. The traffic is huge, but the buying power is very low.

Nice toughs, in my case I think it's all about the market research people do before they start an online business. Some people will think because they can generate traffic they will sell it's pretty wrong way.
I always tried to find my potential traffic source even before looking for domain name or my keyword when I started a new website - sometimes is good sometimes you loose.
But what think is sure - it's better to have quality (targeted visitor) than quantities. ( I learned it with pain )
After all it's just my 2 cents !!!

All of this makes sense, that is why I was wondering out loud. I am not the best in market research and I do not have a lot of sites but the ones I do have all made me SOME money in some sort of way with a fraction of the traffic. Now that I am working on e-comm the traffic is higher but still less than many but the money is SO much higher than the posters I am reading from BHW.

Just wondering where they are getting that traffic or what type of niches they are in to be doing so badly.

There probably getting traffic from spammed to death sources and mostly kids that are to young to buy anything.

Depending on how targetted your traffic are and which kind of traffic, this is what is the "factor" on how much you can possibly earn. Imagine getting 10.000 visitors a day on a food recipe website, you might think you could earn good on this, but no, this only gives peanuts.

So its all about how targetted your traffic is, how high conversionratios you have and the profit per conversion.

Totally agree with you the main point is how targeted your traffic is and what is the value you can offer for this traffic.
As an example a friend of mine have a website with only 200 visitors a days and he is earning 4 to 5 figure each month.
He choose a very luxury topic and he is earning his money with the commission earned on each sell done through his website.
Some month he's got 3-5 client other month 1-2 but as the product he sells is very very expensive he got nice cut for each client he referred to the company.
Online marketing is like business in real life - you need a product, you need a shop but more than ever you need people ready to spend in YOUR shop.
Just have to find this 3 element and all the rest is just technical stuff (ok I simplified it a bit but you get my point)

I don't think this is some sort of weird mathematical algorithm to decipher is it?
Honestly, if you are making $15k per day, thats great news, but if you are at that stage:
1- What is the need for you to come here and ask how can people earn so low with so much traffic while we have few traffic and earn big bucks?
2- What is the need for you to slap your earnings? Seems like a big brag to me, doesnt it?

In any case, if you are going to go full on peacock, simply say what is the product you are earning so much from.
How much have you spent on SEO? How much have you spent building everything? And what is your current monthly expenditure?
Generating $15k a day, is not the same as investing $10k and Getting $5k.

In eithe case, congrats dude, great achievement, but as I said before, I believe it is a pretty obvious thing the reason why some sites with tons of traffic bring no revenue...

This is pretty much in line with what others say...So the next question is WHY go through the effort of putting up content, the ordeal of trying to rank a keyword that has a lot of traffic and competition only to be in a low conversion, low profit niche? What possesses people to go through this heartbreak?

Not knowing better? Hope the traffic one day converts? Something else?

They do not understand keyword research. They look for low comp high traffic keywords without considering if there is commercial value in the keyword.

There is simply no money in a lot of keywords which is why there is little competition.

If they understood keyword research they wold be looking for keywords with good traffic and low competition that people are running ads for.

"Commercial Value" I love this term Techxan, I think during the transition between online et offline business, this value got lost. Nowaday, a lot of people buy website (niche - ebook - product) because it's looking good, seems fun and they somehow know a bit about the topic.
If you look at some online course about starting website - they always try to explain you that you need to look at keyword with good traffic and low
competition - age....
As I said before, people have forget about the Market research part - which is in my point of view - a step people should not do quickly. If you buy a business next door, one of the first question you will ask is how many PAYING customers so far are you buying. It should be the same thing for a online business than, checking the PR - exact RS per month - PPC etc...
But once again just my 2 cents !!!!

You're making $15/visitor. The only times I see $/visit this high is in email marketing when people would send out mass emails to tell people to buy a particular product.

I'm not sure if your traffic is organic or what, but I'm going to assume that your traffic is very very buyer targeted...meaning that your visitors come to your site ready to buy what you offer with their credit card in their hand.

While it is ideal to target buyers only, some of us like to target non-buyers as well. The idea is that our website will easily convert people already wanting to buy our product, but it could also convert a small percentage of others who are only slightly interested in the product. The latter is obviously a larger market and the increased traffic will decrease our profit/visitor, but our overall sales will be higher.

So while you make $15/visitor with 1,000 visitors/day, others will make less $/visitor but will receive much higher amounts of traffic that increase their profits.

Yep, market research is the Achilles heel of many who start their online venture. Even a smart person will generally fall into that trap without some experience in IM, because the IM niche is flooded with disinformation and market research happens to be the first step needed.

For example, for most its obvious that keywords like "wikipedia" (24900000 exact searches - 830000 searches per day) are not going to bring any serious money. However, when it comes to other brands they think it will be different (e.q. Lady Gaga). Or, they pick some informal term that gets a lot of searches, instead much smaller term that is a shopping/buying query.

Yes, highly targeted and the average ticket is close to $150

Excuse my french but F*ck why other's are failing, why are you succeeding?

What are you doing right?

Can you replicate it? Perhaps you have some formula you are unaware of?

I'd like to challenge you to duplicate your success (on a small scale), create a new service/business/website/product (what ever) and see if you can make $100/day with 100-300 visitors.

I think many people would be able to learn from that and try to duplicate it to their own niches.

These are the kind of people who have no clue about IM.

It comes down to time. And I have sort of replicated it, not with my own product but a niche and Amazon.. Obviously the return is way smaller but still there for the limited number of visitors I get. But I do work full time doing SEO so getting off work to do it again is something I have a hard time doing.

But there is not much to replicate, I find a category of products then try to rank for the category if all else fails rank for the brand along the way. The formula is simple, good original content and links, the whiter the better on tier 1 as far as links and the more content the better as for as on page. AKA "work" something most of us want to do us as little of as possible

Really I was curious how one can fail with so much traffic...and on the flip side, how the heck they were getting so many to start with. I pretty much have seen the answers.
