DISCLAIMER: I have personally NOT done this but I just discovered this and I am pretty sure this has made big money for the person who is running the information.
Background: I am a big cricket fan and right now, WORLD CUP T20 is being held in England. So. I was off looking for streams and managed to find a really high quality FREE stream which was working great.
Now that the world cup is in the second half of its entirity, that stream went offline and the there was a message saying "please visit XXX for our cricket streams"
Now I went to the XXX and they are charging 8 dollars to get access to the streams. and I just bought it
Great little fuking gig.
First you go out and become highly trafficked by offering all the initial.early matches for completely free. I gotta tell you, they offered really high quality stream and they went viral in the cricket audience/fans. pretty much every one I know was watching the streams on their website.
Once, you are really high trafficked/popular, and you get to the later half of the tournament, switch everything over to the subscription model and charge a reasonably low price. The are charging 8 dollars and I didnt even think twice and bought it.
The first website that went viral is:
http://tvindian.freehostia.com/3.php
The above site has a lot of ads so they prob made some money from that too.
Now go top the second site they send you too and you get to:
http://www.sportsmediaz.com
Again, I signed up. It was a no brainer and the quality is really good.
I dont know the technicals ins and outs of streaming live online but they are somehow streaming setanta sports and sky sports.
I am sure they are making a killing right now.
I am actually quite fascinated about the logistics of such a gig so if anyone knows the insa nd outs, please share.
If you dont live in the USA or any other lawsuit happy country, this could make a killing.
To finish off, let me give some ideas. Coming up is Wimbledon which is broadcasted for free in England but not around the world. Maybe you could profit from that.
In closing, take it for what its worth and go make some dough!!!
