So this is my first venture into niche markets and EMD's...my keyword has 880 exact global searches and 590 local monthly searches with low competition. this is a topic i know a lot about so i'm kind of excited to see what i can do..are those search figures worth it, though? i didn't really do any other keyword search though, kind if a blind fire i suppose. not really sure how to do keyword research yet. opinions?

yeah, that is fairly low. As xxf8xx, 5k+ would obviously be better, but I've noticed that once you start hitting that range, there is decent competition.
In the past, I generally have targeted 1600 to 2500 searches a month. Once I rank top 3, I make around $2-$5 a day from that type of search volume. I would avoid 5k+ search terms if you're a beginner.
