Just installed Linux-Ubuntu!

don't bother with ubuntu.

if you guys are going to learn a whole new operating system, learn OPENBSD

why?
becuase it is secure from default, and used to run millions of servers. forget ubuntu, it's the windows of linux. after you install, there are gaping security holes due to their 'noob friendly' installation. with openbsd, you learn security the right way because you need to manually initialize processes and installs to make it insecure. in doing so, you learn about security. it is free, and not only can you run pir8 dvds and porn on it, you can run the most secure servers in the world.

don't believe me? look up cardersmarket. max ray vision ran it, and was never, ever hacked. eventually the FBI got him, but it was due to an accomplice that ratted him out. they could never get into his servers

trust me there is no money in learning how to run an ubuntu server/desktop. however there IS money in being an openbsd admin. just get some unix books, read them and you are good to go it is not difficult whatsoever.

yeah, I'm actually going to college right now... my course's consist of Windows, Linux, and Unix. Really excited to start learning some useful information

I use virtual box as well for seo tools if they dont run in wine. been a linux user for many yrs . I love my linux :rock:

I heard Centos and Fedora is the most secure one along with CRUX.Never knew about OpenBSD.Between will iptables work on OpenBSD?

I'm a happy Linux user myself. Been like this for almost a year now. So far, I have multiple versions of Linux (Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Mint) installed side by side Windows XP in my notebook PC. And I use Kubuntu on my desktop. I was going to try BackTrack (the penetration testing Linux) instead of Mint, but BackTrack is a bit involved to install into the hard drive.

Anyway, one of these days, I'll be testing Fedora and other flavors of Linux just to keep up with the technology.

Linux is only intimidating to people who don't want -- can't have -- and aren't matured enough to have full control over their computer and its resources. Things like GUI are irrelevant, entirely irrelevant when discussing the usefulness of an operating system. Linux by nature is for people who like to create their own things. I have virtualbox but I hardly go on it anymore unless I want to use teamviewer, even when isolated it [win] slows down my computer and eats my resources. I have Windows 7 on another computer and its for leisure purposes. Windows users have very poor excuses to bash Linux. I also think Linux is a philosophy. I encourage everyone to have an installation of a distro, if for nothing more than to escape proprietary imprisonment. Anti-Linux sentiment is another by-product of the stupidity which infects our society. Nobody wants to have control of their life anymore. Nobody wants to make the tough decisions, nobody wants to step out of line. Just buy Mac and plug in you proprietary iPod. That's much more simple, isn't it?

Yaa I use xubuntu. Even faster and super awesome.

OpenBSD uses pf filters for firewalls. Also strong crypto is used for the core operating system and memory. Pretty much every detail has been security audited and the install is locked down by default, so you have to enable things to make it insecure instead of disabling default junk usually found in most other distros.

Just make sure you download the Canadian or EU versions, as they don't come with crippled crypto like the US distro's do (due to stupid US law on exporting crypto)

You can just run OpenBSD as a firewall too.. setup your regular linux iptables then for additional barriers throw in a bsd pf filter. Simple to set up, can run on anything even a used computer from 1993. They also develop OpenSSH
