Just how important is domain age?

Im working on a site and ive noticed alot of my competition have some pretty old domain names. The oldest one is 14 years old and alot are around 5 years. While having a good aged domain, they dont have much for PR, the highest being 2. Also they are lacking in backlinks, using SEO Quake the links to domain (LD) are anywhere from 1-5000 and the actual links to page for the keywords im targeting are all less the 25.

So with some good backlinks will these sites be easy to outrank even though they have good aged domains?

What about the on-site SEO of your competitors? If they are good in on-site SEO, it is some what tough to outrank them as they are all aged domains which already gained good trust from G0ogle.

If they are bad in on-site SEO, you can outrank them with good on-site SEO and some backlinks considering the actual links to page for the keywords your are targeting. EMD is an added advantage.

I used Traffic Travis to analyze some keywords and the onsite SEO for the top 20 sucks. All have the keyword in the title, but they are either missing the description or H1 tag. The only thing they got going for them is the domain age.

Aged domain are always helpful, they get you the benefit of old backlinks and also the organic traffic, and frankly SE are like always rewarding the old domain and not that friendly to new ones..
