@OP: do not recommend you to pay someone to stop attacking you. If you pay that will be the key they will use all the time.
Do research and get some anti-DDoS tools.

Any idea why? Are some people bored and want to mess around with others? Are they just configuring their new botnet toy and figured they can test it on me?

I think they just send their shit out and hope they find a site that isn't well defended, nothing personal or targeted. Had the same issues with 2 sites a few weeks ago, built around the same time and totally unrelated niches so was confused myself but just keep them extra secure for a couple weeks and you should be good
 
We getting 2-3 attack for per day. Also we using cloudflare, but sometimes layer type very harmful. So no risk very low chance for standart users.
