Would the back links still be good if I password protect the content on the page so my sneaky ba$tards competitors couldn't see any of the content?

Yes the backlinks will still be good.

But google will not be able to see the site either, so it wont be indexed or rank.

But it will have good backlinks.

How are your visitors going to find you if you password protect your site? How is google and other search engines going to see what you have on your site?

I don't want visitors, just high PR links.

So it is necessary to leave the page "open"?

You are not getting / keep high PR without visitors.

Password protection is a bad idea, it will just mean having a domain that is of no use to you or anyone else.
