Journey to $XXX/mo with Amazon Affiliate

Hey everybody,

I'm just throwing up a quick thread for now but I will edit this post when I have more time. The reason for adding a quick version is to get some insight on how to proceed from where I am now.

Things that I have done:
-KW Research to find a niche that I can compete
-Set up domain and host
-Set up a website blog with information on said niche
-Populated site with 15~ ish well written articles(400-1500 words ea.)
-Set up analytics and tracking
-Set up socials

Now I'm playing the waiting game to get indexed and start getting traffic.

I'm kind of in a limbo here about where to proceed. Do I try to build a few backlinks every day? Share a lot on social media and get involved? Or do I just wait to get traffic and optimize around it?

Is there a way to see how much commission any given product will give?
If there is a sale, does it show up instantly?
I've heard about some rules that Amazon is particular about. Have you have any issues with them?

Is it better to use ppc like facebook ads to drive traffic to amazon site? or it is better with SEO

SEO and methods such as blog comments, forum comments, social media and QA are all methods you should aim to use. Organic traffic is where you'll be getting laser targeted buyers. Better to spend money on some high quality links that will help seo and drive traffic than ppc.

Note: I believe you are able to use ppc to drive traffic to your site but not to directly link to Amazon.

Sorry just saw your message. Don't believe you can tell individual product commission but you can find what category the products in and look at the commission for that category.

Sales show up next day I believe it will show fees after item is shipped I'm pretty sure.

Okay, so it looks like you can't edit your posts on this forum. If I am mistaken, then I just haven't found out how.

Anyway, I'd like to make a bit of a better post than my original. I am somewhere between week 3 and week 4 in this project.

I have a website that I manage for my own business which is my day job. I have done a pretty good job with the local SEO that I am quite proud of. Although I've had some success, I haven't really jumped into the market where you earn money online. I'd like to put my strengths to the test to see if anything comes of it. I started poking around in BHW because I remembered that this forum had some exceptional information when I was just trying to figure out SEO.

Week 1

• I spent week 1 reading. All my free time was devoted to sucking up information like a sponge. This is one of the strengths that I was talking about. I LOVE information. It's everywhere, and it's usually free.
• Lots of podcasts, websites, PDFs, and google searching kept me buried in the learning process.

Week 2

• Week 2 was all about keyword research. So many threads/videos/podcasts put so much emphasis on the importance of keyword research.
• I got myself a trial of SEMRush and got Adwords working. I was making notes all week about things that I can try to research. I wasn't exactly sure what metrics to keep an eye out for, but I knew that low competition = good.
• I found a niche kind of by accident. Some keyword popped out at my while I was doing some related phrases searches. The difficulty was somewhere between 40-50 in a niche that has very little written about it. There are some tough competitors, but I figured that I could sideswipe them with long tail keywords.
• I grabbed a domain and host
• Started developing a landing page.

Week 3-Week 4 AKA Right Now

• I spent tireless hours writing content for a handful of pages. I aimed to do 500+ words per page. For the most part, this was achieved. There are still a few smaller pages that have around 300 words written that I will improve upon.
• My priority started to shift towards making the site live and start getting indexed.
• I made the site live with 15~ish pages and started to work on everything that was lacking.
• I did a bunch of social outreach and some not-so-great link building. Through social media referral, I started to see some traffic. None of this traffic data was really usable since it wasn't organic.
• From the lame traffic that I do get, there have been some click-throughs to Amazon.
• All the analytics and tracking is working and collecting data.
• I started tracking about 15 keywords/phrases that I'm sort of targeting.
• Out of those 15, it said that 5 of them have started ranking
• Added another 15 keywords to track, and now it says that 8 keywords are ranking.
• Writing and planning more posts/content with targeted keywords that I'm not ranking for.
• After today, the site will have been online for 1 week.

The take-away:

I dove head first into this project, expecting to make tons of mistakes. That is exactly what is happening. I keep hearing that it takes about six months to start seeing any kind of real progress(at least when you're starting out). I'm hoping to log in to Amazon Associates and seeing my first internet marketing dollar made.

nice journey. i suggest while waiting for the keywords to rank, you may try posting on forums. you can see results within 7-10 days.
