Journey to Creating a Business

Best of luck with your journey :)!

Good luck! Remember if you don't succeed at first don't give up and keep working hard to make your goal(s) happen! :)

Remember:

Success if going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.

Meaning, that if you succeed at first, keep working on your visions and stay dedicated and more importantly "excited" about what it is that you're doing and eventually, you'll reach the point of success! :)

Veyron

Thanks guys!

DAY 8
One of my leads replied back. They said they weren't interested in paying for hosting, so I replied trying to sell them a $100 design. The other leads didn't reply back yet. I'm going to email them all again tomorrow morning, hopefully I'll at least get some sort of response.
My ultimate goal right now is to make one sale. That'll pay for hosting this and next month so I could continue, otherwise I'd have to wait one month for my income from other sources to come in.

Good luck with your journey! I'm guessing that most people will just brush off emails offering paid services as spam, maybe that's why not many are replying to you?

I don't know, seems reasonable. I'd use another email, but at that point I feel like they'll think I'm desperate. Thanks anyways.

DAY 9
I actually replied to all of the leads this morning instead of tomorrow, just wanted to get things going. I got two replies back with excuses. The first one said they can't transfer their domain because of this 60 day lock, and the other said they'd like to hold a spot til next month. I emailed back to the first one he could just change his nameservers on his current domain registrar, and I told the second one that I might not be able to save a spot for him. Hopefully I didn't lose any potential clients, first time doing email marketing.

DAY 10
20 more days to make at least one sale. I've yet to receive a reply back from any of my email leads. So, I'm going to go ahead and start cold calling local businesses. Next week is finals week, which means I basically get out of school early for 3 days. So the plan? I just got a yellowpages book in my area, so I'm going to start phoning people. I'll schedule a meeting with them at a Starbucks and have them sign papers. So here's the problem, being a minor, I'm technically not allowed to bind myself to a contract; however, I feel like the client will never really have legal action taken against me for anything. The contract basically sets out terms and refunds and whatnot.

I highly recommend you get an actual attorney or lawyer to draft a contract for you, but I'm not in the financial position to make that call. The contract is there for more "legitimacy".

Trying my best not to give up, I feel like there's so much potential here, I'd like to see at least one client before this ends.

Email is not the right way to go. They will just consider it spam.
You're much better off calling or sending letters. It adds more legitimacy, and they will know you are a real person.

Wow! I must say that you possess great skills :) The flow of venture is highly appreciated...

DAY 11
Alright, so not much happened this day (updating a day late because I was busy). I cold called like 20 people, one guy asked me to send him my portfolio to his personal email. He's an electrician. So I sent him a "portfolio" and haven't received a reply yet. I would've been cold calling all day, but as you guys know, finals are next week.

good luck man, i will always check for update

Thanks. Yea, I guess emailing isn't as effective anymore.

DAY 11
So, today. I didn't do any cold calling because I got home late. I did start writing my letters though. I'm manually writing each one, not going to do any printing. I feel like the lead will feel more special if I personally write him/her a written letter. Hopefully, I'll be able to send the letters on Monday.

Anyways, plan for tomorrow is to cold call like crazy. Hopefully I can get some meetings set up. I've got around 3 weeks.

Best of luck to you. :) but 30 days to build a functioning online business is very little time, please set more time aside for yourself to build your business. Don't quit after 30 days you will just be starting buy then.

Wow, congrats thus far. Make sure you talk smooth and be as open as possible during meetings!

Day 12-15
Haven't updated in a bit because I was busy, finals week is here. To get this out of the way, I've decided to hold off sending letters because I feel like it would conflict with Christmas, so I though it'd be in my best interest to wait til after Christmas, possibly New Years. Now, the journey would technically be done by then, but I've decided to continue it and set a monetary goal because of a particular scenario that happened.

Basically, I've closed a deal with a local plumbing business yesterday. Web design for $425. Not too bad. Profits would probably be somewhere around $200-$150, since my client wants an HTML site, and I only have basic knowledge of HTML. Initially, I was offering him my free web design with the purchase of hosting, but he said he'd rather have a web design upfront. We decided to meet up on Monday, then talked at Starbucks for around an hour. I had him sign papers and he wrote me a check for $425.

You cannot believe how incredibly hard it was for me to keep in my happiness when he handed me the check.

Great job , don't forget that u can scale and repeat what u made there :)

I'm happy for you. Keep going. And don't forget to update us here.

DAY 16-21
Haven't updated in a while because of other projects and not much going on for this journey. I made a total profit of $125 on my first client (I'm using a BST seller).

I decided to drop the "free web design" gig, for mainly two reasons: 1. I feel like leads don't want to switch their current hosting (since mine is technically extremely overpriced), and 2. I suck balls at pitching free web design. So, I plan to switch to shared hosting and I'm extending this journey for a goal of $2500 in profits. It looks like a measly goal for a lot of people, but I feel like if I set my expectations too high, I'll end up doing this for money and perform crappily.

Anyways, good news: I met with 2 more leads (getting better at cold calling). One is a psychologist with really bad reviews on yelp and GMaps; and a local auto repair guy with tons of customers, but no reviews or website. I literally felt like I hit a goldmine after meeting with these guys.

The psychologist wants me to make a website and do ORM for him. Since I didn't have the proper papers to sign, we decided to meet again after Christmas. After a bit of negotiating, we settled for $1000 upfront and $250 yearly, he wants me to also host his site for him. To be honest, I never really planned to offer ORM, but he seemed really intrigued when I mentioned it and asked if I could do it for him. As you guys know, ~$500 is already a shit load of money for me, so my mind was already going blank, so I just grabbed a price out of thin air ($1000 total) and he said "let's do it."

As for the auto repair guy, he's a bit similar, but wants to pay me separately. In other words, he wants me to make the website and do ORM, but he wants to see the website first. We negotiated on $700 (he wants me to take HQ pictures, so I'm paying my friend who is a professional photographer $150 to take pictures) for the website and $500 biannually for ORM.

So, how am I going to do ORM? It will be a hybrid of originalposter's method and 7878's method (basically ask them to go on the website and post a review; if it's bad, it'll be sent directly to the owner, if it's good, they'll be redirected to yelp or something).

Also, I know that a majority (or at least a lot) of BHW is filled with hormone spilling teenagers like myself (I'm 15). Don't be afraid to start up offline marketing. I feel like it is so much more profitable and so many businesses (especially local and small bizzes) are... unexposed to the internets. Right now is the right time to pick the ripe fruit, before they find out ;D. Anyways, a lot of you teens are thinking that they won't take you seriously because of your looks or way of speaking. Of my 3 meetings with my clients, here are some tips I can share to you guys:

1. Don't fucking mumble. Open your mouth when you guys talk for jesus' sake. I'm in drama, so it was easier for me to talk to random people; however, that doesn't mean you guys can't talk properly. All you have to do is open your mouth. Be confident, don't think that you're younger than your client. Before every meeting, I talk myself into believing that I'm a very successful 27 year old man that's made it on Forbes top billionaires.

2. Lose the acne. Whether it's surgery, over-the-top meds, or make up; at least lose MOST of your acne. Acne shows pubescent and your clients may take you less seriously. I had a SERIOUS acne problem before this, but slapped on some benzoyl peroxide and worked wonders for me.

3. Dress formally. For meetings, I wear a dress shirt, tie, jeans, and dress shoes. I occasionally wear my brother's coat. I'm sure most of you teens have dress shirts and dress shoes. Whatever you do, don't wear bowties. You may look spiffy as fuck, but I think bowties look less "business-like" than ties. Don't have a dress shirt? A polo or a button up will do. Whatever you do, don't dress like a fucking hypebeast or "bop" or whatever they call it. Just dress business-like.

4. Contracts. Ok, so here, I'm being a bit illegal, since you can't actually sign a contract until you're 18 (I do it anyways, because I just convince myself that none of my clients will take legal action). If you feel like your leads may take legal actions (most of the people where I live are pretty nice people... I think), convince them to pay through your site. Register your site under a LEGAL person's name (parents or older siblings). So all you're doing is selling your service while your guardian is handling everything of a legal nature.

PROFITS:
$125/$2500 (5%)
