Journey Through The Amazon

Amazon affiliate marketing is something I've always wanted to really get my fingers into and mess around with. The idea that a person could go to Amazon through your link for the purpose of buying a certain item, but end up buying others at the same time and giving you commissions on the extra items as well is just an awesome one to me.

So it's time to take action and make some stores.

I have a plan, which I've already started to carry out. I'm going to start with one store and use it as a learning tool to help me more efficiently create more stores in other niches later on down the road. This first store is based on a niche I'm extremely passionate about, and that was done on purpose as I'm going to be spending a fair chunk of time on this.

Besides this niche being something that I'm passionate about, it's also a niche in which there are a load of accessories that people tend to buy while buying the main products, so more chances for yummy commissions on up sells.

This particular niche lends itself rather well to video reviews, so YouTube will be my primary focus point for traffic generation.

First step is to start importing items into my shop. There are literally thousands of items in the niche I've picked, so importing could take a while, but I'm going to start with the bare essentials first and then just add to it little by little. Once the bare essentials are added I'll work on traffic generation while I continue to add items to the store. Another good thing about this niche is that it lends itslf well to long tail keyword terms. So this shall be my secondary focal point for traffic generation.

Seeing as though it is 7:30PM as I type this, I shall use this as a check in time every day to update this thread on my progress.

My current goal - To get 1 sale in 30 days.

I already had a domain which I'll be using as well as hosting. I've gone with a very nice free theme from WooThemes which fits in well with their WooCommerce plugin which I will be using as a template for my store.

Today I began the import process (I've purchased an automatic tool for this. Unfortunately, it's meh at best as it doesn;t produce the exact results I'm after so a touch of tweaking is required. So the import process is semi automatic)

I may hand out my link to certain members at my discretion if anyone is interested.

One of my inspirations for starting this project, actually!

Mini update -

I've imported several more products, taking me to a total of 10 so far. May not sound like a lot, but all of these items have full item galleries, a complete description of around 500 words for most of them, reviews, specifications and a tiny amount of SEO done for them.

On the note of SEO, which is the best rank monitoring software at the moment? I used to use Market Samurai many moons ago but the last time I used it, I wasn't very happy with the whole having to wait a few days to see your sites rank update.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Not too much to update at this time. More items were imported, more reviews written. Spider visits are increasing and I noticed I'm starting to rank for one term on page 5, so that's a plus.

Welp triple post incoming, but I'm sticking this thing out regardless. Good news today. Ranking on page 14 for the main keyword term that I wasn't even really trying to rank for, so that's a nice bonus.

Today saw me import a few more items, create a couple of blog posts about said items as well as trying my hand at creating a Squidoo in order to gain some nice links from a web 2.0 property.

So I've just had a look at my Amazon stats out of curiosity and noticed this.



11 clicks. That's interesting. 11 cookie dumps is the way I see it

When you say that you import items do you simply scrape product descriptions and reviews from amazon? If so what is the added value? And don't you get penalized by Google for duplicate content?

Do you use an emd?
How tough is the competition?
Do you add any additional articles other than products?
How many backlinks do you have by now?

I make some pretty major adjustments to a lot of what gets imported from the product description. Most of the time, they are poorly written so I improve upon them. I also add my own thoughts an opinions these items to help create uniqueness.

After the "importing" stage, what I'm basically just left with is the pictures from Amazon.

No, not exactly at least. My domain does have the word shop in it though. I've done this by design. My thought process is that people who are typing in "____ shop" into Google are at the stage where they are ready to buy.

I have blog updates stating that "my store has been updated and now stocks X, Y and Z" and X, Y and Z all link to their respective product pages. I do this to help build internal links as well as to get some blog post rolling out. In each of these I type I mini review of the product as well to add extra value.

In the future, I will be reviewing every single item I add in my store.

Zilch.

Just did a little look and saw that my product links are starting to index now so that's a huge bonus. On page 1 for buy _____ online for one of my many many products !

EDIT: Double bonus. Also ranking on page 10 for just the product name!

I have been an Amazon affiliate for years but have never really done anything focused on it... I am toying with the idea of developing something.

Can you better describe your niche, without necessarily giving it away? For example, is the niche focused on a specific product, a people group (cat owners, gamers, etc), or...?

It's not based on one specific product, there are literally thousands of products in this niche. But the niche itself is extremely specific in the type of people it attracts, mainly because the people that take this niche very very seriously can easily spend $100,000 + on it.

So I'd say it's based on a group of people.

Created a Pinterest account today to give it a try. Pinned the shit out of all of my images. Also created some brand specific lenses that I've linked back to my main store as well. Imported a couple more items too, but could have done a lot more. Will do so tonight.

Missed an update last night due to a blackout.

Site is starting to rank really very nicely. I'm on the first page for the domain name keyword. All of my product links are indexed and ranking for buy _________ (Where ______ is the product name)

Clicks are starting to come in as well. I was at 11 before, up to 16 now. Still no sales to report though.

Oh and the spam is starting to pile up as well on my blog posts, that's always a good sign Thanks Akismet!

Website continues to rank well, though my Squidoo lens was locked for "duplicate content" I need to either spin it, or outsource it, though I'll do that at a later time. Store has more items now too, and a new blog post with links to said items was published today.
