I'm creating this Journey to stay motivated, get over my fear of going broke and get input from people who have more experience than I do in building a content business. Thank you for reading or leaving your thoughts or advice.
Short Backstory:
I'm a software engineer with about six years of working experience, and within that time, I've also been able to pick up some marketing skills. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I was part of the mass layoff last year at my previous Job.
While at my previous Job, I worked on my product, and when the layoff came, I decided to try working on it full-time. I have always wanted to build my own business, and this felt like a good opportunity to do that. As much as I loved code and building products, it feels more fulfilling to build my own product. When working at these companies, I'd always work on things I didn't believe in or wasn't interested in.
These past few months, I've been building a product I'm sure there's a market for and I'm adding features that gives me an edge over my competition. I've had about 600+ users without much marketing, and reviews have been great. The product is not complete yet, so I'm yet to start accepting payment, and that's where the problem is.
It's been about 7 months since I left my Job, and I'm getting anxious about eating too deep into my savings. To deal with this, I've decided to reduce my efforts on the product and instead focus on building a business for the next 1 - 2 months that can bring in some revenue and still leave me with some time to work on my product.
Business Plan: Mini Technical Writing Agency
The quickest way I can make money and scale is by doing technical writing. I've done some technical writing as a side hustle in the past and with my experience as a software engineer, I can apply to technical writing gigs. I've done some research on companies that accepts technical writers, and the range of compensation is between $50 - $300 per article depending on how complex the topic is.
My first milestone is to make $1000 in the next 1 month
To achieve this, I will have to
- Write 5 blog posts that I can use as my portfolio when applying to these gigs (currently rounding up with article 2)
- Apply to 5 technical writing agencies in the next two weeks.
I'm not sure if I'll get the jobs immediately, how long an interview process would take or how much the companies would pay per article, so I can't make any predicted numbers right now, but I'll just leave $1000 out there. I think it's attainable.
Depending on how successful it is, I might be able to scale writing using some AI tools and developers I could get assistance from.
So, cheers to attempting to abandon a 9-5!
Thanks for reading! I would appreciate every suggestion, advice, tip
