[Journey] Join me on the road to weighted pull ups

Thanks a lot! Going to check out that PDF shortly. Currently swapping the assisted pull ups out for a lat pulldown, as I have not done any vertical back work for 3 months :)

Be conscious of the elbow when you're doing the pulldowns. If it's hurting afterwards you'll need to back off that as well. It's annoying but a couple of weeks of being careful now beats seriously fucking up the tendons. Pay attention if it aches more after a workout, not just during the movement itself.

I ignored that pain before and it took a loooong time to stop hurting. A couple of weeks now can save you a load of time further down the road.

My elbow pain is almost completely gone (thank god).
I am going to quit doing pull-ups (also negatives) for a while now, as @SEOMadHatter warned me for this.
On Tuesday I did a pull day with heavy barbell rows, lat pulldown (using a wooden bar/stick and bands attached to the top of squat rack), and single arm DB rows - they all felt amazing, very happy we are atleast able to train outside again. Not really a problem for me anyways, as I only train with free weights and no machines.

That's all for now, probably won't be updating a lot as I am not going to do pull-ups for a while.

love it brother, glad to hear you're feeling better.
Also - reported your profile pic (rules say no skin or any sexy images on profiles :D )

Thanks for that :P
I will change it, as people may get intimidated.

I think you're making the right call. The pain dying out is good but the exercises in that PDF are still worth adding to your general routine because they'll balance out the muscle group and help it not happen in the future.

Also, a really good idea to follow the advice on deep tissue massage on the point just now. Rest alone means it might back as scar tissue which is weaker than the original tendon and just ends up ripping again when you go back to training. Even a couple of minutes while you're watching TV or something just dig into it with your other thumb.

Frustrating but if you've caught it early, it won't be long before you're back at it.

Kind of excited right now!

For the people who didn't read my first post, I am suffering from light scoliosis, which makes push days very hard for me as my left shoulder is messed up. I've found a work around that makes me train chest and shoulders without pain for months now. (not optimally, but better than nothing)

This weekend, my family came over, and I was looking for something nice to wear. I found a shirt that sat very wide when I wore it with Christmas, but now it was way too tight to fit for my shoulders and chest :D

Nothing to do with the pull-ups, but this is a big win for me as this is the first time in years I can progress my chest and shoulders. Time to donate some of my clothing that is too tight now to a charity :)

Another pull day done. Weight on barbell rows and single arm DB rows are increasing nicely while gaining ~0.2kg a week at the moment.

Added some assisted pull ups (on a machine), and my elbow pain seems to have dissappeared. Felt pretty good on my lats, hopefully I can keep up with this and hop on the bar soon.

Congrats on the gains and the elbow easing up!

Easing back into a little light training myself today. So far, so good. Just hoping I don't wake up tomorrow with an aching elbow again.

Born with it? I was almost anorexic 4 to 5 years ago, weighing ~55kg at 198cm tall lol
It is all hard fucking work brother :)
Damm, I was 53 kg at 180 cm and I was just like stick. Can only imagine what you looked like. Very impressed with the progress you have made and work you have put in. So happy for you. I am slowly on my way there as well eating shit tons of foods and excercising.

And good luck withthe pull up. I dont even try them at gym. I used to do like 6-8 of them while 55 kg but since I gained 20 kg I can only do 1. Feels so embarrasing :D

Thanks a lot man. Good luck on your journey as well :)

I was also able to do 10+ of them (even with 5-10kg dumbell between my feet) when I was around 65-70kg :p

Great journey , keep us updated with your results and your observations.

I remember 6 years ago when I was quite active, doing some lifting and other exercises I was able to do something like 70 'fake-pullups'(the way the average Joe does them ,without knowing they're incorrect) and ~40 correct ones.

I must say I've read the text written in the 1st post, and a very intelligent thing mentioned is :

motivate others to start working out, as it has way more positive aspects other than the physical part. In fact, if I never started working out I most likely would've been the old desperate dude with zero confidence who would've ended up in a cubicle for the rest of his life.

It'd be very good if you'd mention some of those positive aspects ,as they'd help people even more. It'd be even better if a mod would let you add them in the first post..

I remember that when I was active ,lifting and stuff , I had MORE ENERGY ,More MOTIVATION , and I don't mean only motivation to lift, but Motivation to GET THINGS DONE (which can be applied to Money-Making / Learning and others )
From what I know there are also great improvements at brain level .. You should really add a more detailed description, especially based on your observations (especially regarding improvements in motivation and the will to get things done) .. ![/spoiler]

Thank you, and that would be a nice idea. Maybe a mod will pick this up when they read this.

Had one great lowerbody workout during the weekend, and I've dropped the use of straps during my Romanian deadlifts to build my grip strength up some more, as this is something I'm really lacking at.
Also upped my calories with 250 for each day, as the scale is not budging atm. Now aiming at 3500-4000 depending on the day and activity and hoping to gain ~0.2kg/wk. E.g. if I cycle to my office for a day, I add 200 calories because of my activity. I prefer this a lot over just eating the same thing every day.

You might as well add another 33cal (=>233) ,and you'll get 1kg/month considering that +/- 7000cal = +/- 1kg

Just did that, thanks for the tip :P

Yesterday I miscounted my macro's in the lunch, so I had to eat 1400 more calories right before I went to bed. Wasn't easy, but no excuses here. Upped my morning shake to 1200 calories, so it's a bit easier throughout the day to get all my calories in.

You are getting too much of your calories from shakes , even though I think I might be wrong since your body structure is bigger, thus you have higher requirements.
Normally shakes should simply be what they are recommended to be : supliments , and everyone should focus mainly on normal eating ,because this also trains and expands your ability to eat more,in order to meet the requirements, maybe even without shakes ,which are recommended if you weren't able to complete the daily calorie necessity.

Kindly write a detailed post on other positive aspects(I mentioned some of them in an upper post) ,that would surely motivate others to start, especially since it'll indirectly help them with their money projects :)

I know mate, but your 'shake' is not my shake. I add 200 grams of oats, milk, a bit of whey, and some peanut butter. I don't add a shit ton of protein powder and processed things in it :p
So the only supplement in it, is 30 grams of whey. (And my creatine)
It's pretty much the same as a HUGE bowl of oatmeal, but blended and able to drink it all within 5 minutes.

I've been taking this morning shake for 5 years, just in different portions. The only way I can down food in the morning, because if I don't do this - my life would be hell.

That sounds more than ok.

Regarding the morning thing .. A little bit more than 1 year ago I trained myself to be able to eat well in the morning(most people have troubles with it,as I also did), and it become my most important meal of the day. Unfortunetly months passed ,some changes occured and I wasn't able to continue it,thus I lost that full-ability , even though I still can eat a good amount of food early in the day ..so it wasn't in vain. The idea is that it was quite a strugle, but it became easier and easier once I got used to it

Not going to waste my time eating in the morning :P
It would probably take me an hour to force myself to eat 1200 calories, if I can even eat it all
This shake takes me 5 minutes to drink, and contains better foods than most peoples real breakfast :P
