I am on LI every day during work week in my day job so have a couple of pointers.
I recommend to never pitch to people right away after they accept your connection invite. Perhaps send a 'thank you for connecting', give them a chance to see your posts on their feed before reaching out to them.
Either make sure that everyone that you connect with are part of your target audience or read the persons profile before pitching to them. Most of the pitches that I get on LI are for things that I don't have a need for or that I gave no indication on my profile. For example, according to my profile, I work for corp America in a non-sales non-marketing non-tech job but I keep getting pitched for SEO and sales appointment services. I removed these people from my connections right away.
