Joomla vs Wordpress {Choosing a CMS That’s Right For You }

When you are looking to create a website, you will probably try some of the content management systems or commonly called CMS. Two of the most popular among them are WordPress and Joomla.

In this thread I want to know your opinion about those two main CMS systems.

So....Joomla or Wordpress?

My opinion is.
There is no right or wrong CMS in the general sense. There is only what is best for your business and your website. I use Joomla for most of projects small or big simply because it is a better CMS than WP, and you never know it a big project goes small or a small one goes big. Also i have been using Joomla since 1.5 so i am kind of used to it i guess.
 
I will never ever use joomla again. This is the most complicated and unfriendly CMS that I have ever used :D

I will go with Wordpress with both hands up!

Wordpress - it is SEO friendly, user friendly, tons of free stuff for it, easy to manage, easy to modify.

Joomla - very heavy, not SEO friendly, very hard to manage, very hard to modify, it sucks :D
 
wordpress is good, because thousands are helpful plugins are there in the database, so you should go for wordpress
 
I think wordpress is much better if you are like 80% of the so called professionals and have no clue about design, css, html and just wanna do quick websites. They have many plugins and modules that will help you do that and thats actually nice.

Joomla is on the next step. SEO wise they are pretty much the same but with joomla you can do so much more if we are talking about design and the websites are much more professional. The hell i just did a website in joomla for a customer for $1200 and he loved it.

So my opinion if you are a noob and just trying to figure things out its easier (not better) to start with wordpress. If you wanna do bigger things you should go with joomla. I personally started with joomla years ago, and after making amazing websites in it for years i tried wordpress and it was shockingly easy and disgusting for me.

See thats what im talking about.
If you dont know what you are doing than wordpress is your motherland. And i would put money on making my joomla more user, seo and design friendly that any of your wordpress nonsense ). If you want bolgs stick to wordpress.

For at least the one reason that I have more experience with Joomla, I prefer that over Wordpress. Statistically I think WP is more popular.

If we think about the user experience from the point of view of a user, who has no (or little) clue of the technical side of the web, the installation part is easier with Joomla, as with WP you have to manually edit the config.php and make the DB connection. With Joomla you only have to know the access details to that specific DB.

I have worked with a variety of sites, and this far I would personally only use WP when the site is only a blog, otherwise Joomla. I have created sites with very different purposes (product presentation sites, ecommerce sites, real-estate sites, one page sites... all these with a variety of plugins with customized code) with Joomla, and found the code to be relatively easy to edit and understand fast.

I also like the way the Joomla extensions to be found from the .org site are organized.

What I like about WP, is that out-of-the-box you can get a modern, professional-looking website, which is not the case with Joomla, the design of Joomla site will always need to be edited for the purpose to look professional.

This has absolutely no basis. Tools are tools, CMSes are CMSes, and every developer has a preference. Using one or the other has no bearing on your skill level.

Some of the most prominent and high dollar designers that you can buy are based almost exclusively in Wordpress design. These are the designers who are carving out new trends and pushing new webstandards. Do they fit into your "noob just trying to figure things out" image, too?

I think Joomla and Wordpress are both excellent CMSes and both have some great communities behind them. However, comparing CMSes to one another is like comparing your favorite brand of car. Everyone has their own thing, but being prejudiced against a group of developers who use a certain CMS because it somehow doesn't meet your perceived standards is silly.

Personally though, I am a through and through WordPress fanboy, but that's what I've been doing for a loooong time.

What do you mean website is more professional? CMS is on the backend, not frontend. What you display in frontend is totally not related to CMS, so saying Joomla website looks more professional is totally wrong, because what you see is html + css + js, and that depends only on you, not the CMS.

Not trying to be snarky, but if your website somehow looks more "professional" in design because you switch CMSes, it sounds like you have some serious issues with your coding abilities.

We can all whip out our CMS edicks and measure eachother up, but in the end, CMSes are purely for end users to manage their content better in the backend. They have absolutely nothing to do with your design. The ONLY valid issue you can have with a CMS is from a pure coding standpoint (Too many database requests, too bulky, etc, etc). Some of the best designers out there are mainly Wordpress based, and I'm talking about the designers who only have to do a few websites a year to live well. Choosing one CMS over the other certainly does not make anyone a "noob".
 
honestly joomla is better then wordpress.. we can say it's one level up from wordpress! and I have no idea about your knowledge but this is true that joomla is great for seo.. especially for url structure!!

Talking about SEO, I have heard something different. WP is out-of-the-box much better than Joomla.

Joomla has plugins, components and modules just like WP, just not as many. WP design can be taken to a whole new level with some proper skillset, since I have heard many actual professional using this tool as one of the platforms onto which build websites. Like I mentioned, I personally prefer Joomla because I have played with that a lot longer time, but I also respect the WP users, since the software cannot be that popular just for nothing.

Would you explain how is it better? Url structure is better? Lol good luck with that, it takes 3 click in WP to set friendly url structure, hows it going in Joomla?

You can set a Search Engine Friendly url structure exactly in 3 clicks in Joomla as well ;)
p.s. in joomla 2.5
 
I think you can do pretty much the same stuff with both CMSes. You can make simple or complex sites with both. The one selling point for me on wordpress is that there is such a huge variety of plugins available due to its popularity. It's also a bit easier on the backend, which is good if you're building a site for a client...

There is not a single thing you could not do in wordpress that you could not do in joomla or vice versa.
I prefer wordpress as I like user interface more..

I agreeee. Everything can be done in either. All the plugins are out there too.

Or you can make a site w/ Ruby. That would work too.
 
Ruby is a programming language, it's not a CMS!
