Java script port of ffmpeg

I am working on a project with uploading of videos on the site. we would like to convert the videos before storing. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a JS port of FFMPEG. so the conversion can be all server side. i have been told from cs majors that this is possible. idk if it has been done before though.

Of course it is possible, but no one has done it since it would be slow as hell (slow like unusable). There are some shared hosts that have FFMPEG installed, and people usually use those to achive the same thing. If you want something simple, you could also use amazon instance with ffmpeg install that would fetch your content, convert it and put it back on your server.

Why would you need a javascript port of FFMPEG to do all conversion server-side? Surely you'd only need that if you wanted to do conversion client-side?

Anyway, it's doable to write codecs in JS and I've done it myself, but only image codecs (GIF/JPEG) and those were pretty slow already. Porting FFMPEG would be a mammoth task though, it's a lot of code. I mean you could probably automate a portion of the porting, but it would be a lot of work.
