For small APP is good.
I am a seasoned java developer and recently learnt Kotlin.
I would say if you are starting fresh, Kotlin is a good language to start. It is advanced and makes many things easier compared to java.
Also, it is growing community but you will find less Kotlin developers compared to Java, you can use that as your advantage.
