I've never seen a blackhat method like this before

So theres a site that ranks for one of the most competitive keywords on the internet. Lets call it site X. I checked its backlinks with majestic seo, but when I open one I don't see any links to site X.

  • I've checked many backlinks with the same result (also the source code).
  • I have checked the backlinks with an external link checker, opened all of them to see if there is a 301 redirect, but there isn't.
  • I have checked the backlinks with google cache to see if the backlinks were there a few days ago, but no.

Can somebody tell me how this is possible?

Its possible to block the bots from Ahrefs, Majestics etc to spy on their backlinks by simply adding something(search for that on BHW) in robot.txt. Some do it because they don't want others to see their secret linking strategy.

I know, but I DO SEE the backlinks on majestic and ahrefs, however I do not see the link on the websites(backlinks).

It could have been removed, whats the backlinks lost ratio like? It could be a quick injection across multiple sites then removed after it's been indexed and new sites found.

You're right. A lot of them was removed already.
 
one of my blogs was once hacked and the front page replaced with some viagra link list... the modified site was only visible to google bot. So try changing your user agent to Googlebot to see if the sites are some link farms.
 
He's probably using a cloaking method. Which means that he is showing the backlink only to bot user agents and not showing it to real visitors, try switching your user agent to googlebot, then visit the website, I'm pretty sure you'll see the links showing up. a simple php script can do this very well.
 
other method he might be using is dynamic links on the website. each time a visitor/bot visits the page, a new set of links are shown. So google will see something, ahrefs something else and you something else.
 
as Ficfroc said, they may use cloaking method and in this case GoogleBot sees the hidden links. You can check those pages in Google cache.
 
Hidden links. Seen a lot of them recently - check the source and see if you can find the link.
 
I ve seen a site with few backlinks ranking 1st for tons of medium competition kws.

the site has many pages and all have a lot , 10k + twitter , 10k+ facebook likes and such...
does this X site has the same?
 
yeah what above said whats the site or do you not want to show it would be interesting to know.
 
those are links on rotation, e.g. 4-5 links on homepage and every time you refresh they change. whoever is providing this service it works, I know a couple of sites that have 300-400k backlinks of this type and they are in #1 position for VERY competetive keywords
 
It is Matt Cutts site, he just puts it there.
 
this site has 700k backlinks of this type, here's a sample site with the links, just check the footer and try to refresh

I have investigated into this method quite a lot, e-mailed 10s of link exchange sites, couldn't find who provides this kind of service,
if anyone found out would be great if they shared :D

That link exchange systems are from poland. Dynamic link exchange system. Shitty sites and with every refresh = different links on page. Links are shitty so scrapebox blasts are sometimes better. But if you want to do neg seo and point few milion links to site in few days ;) Everything is possible. Also when you have tons of quality links and you will point tons of such links... It can give super bost. Without polish language you cant use that. Made by polish spammers for polish spammers lol :D

@OP give me some websites where backlinks should be via pm and i will check it if you want.

i personally know 3 sites in top 5 for 110k exact searches, using this method. 2 of them are only half a year old.
